Just for this thread, erratic doesn't mean shaking. If anyone's thinking I meant that L4D was picking up someone shaking in fear, they've made a mistake.

Increased adrenaline does cause some shaking in people, particularly afterwards. Is a mouse sensitive enough to detect that? Maybe movements aren't so smooth [on a mouse] under such conditions. I don't think it would make any discernible difference on a pad. Maybe it does. Maybe Valve spent a year shooting testers up with adrenaline and then getting them to perform standard tasks on a pad and mouse!

Yes, erratic means shooting blindly, in a "panic". Though that would likely work quite well on the console version with the vast amount of aim assist.

I know what you mean, sometimes when I'm playing Halo and someone catches me unaware I'll flail around trying to shoot them, I'd describe that as erratic.

Since when did the amount of copies sold make a game good? Or what masses on the internet think? If that were the case the greatest games in the world would be The Sims, Guitar Hero and Singstar.

Awesome games with innovative ideas and/or totally solid design otherwise should get 10/10, it's as simple as that.

The last line is surely a joke as well?
Well, I'm not proposing an exact formula, just the need for a good retrospectoscope.

And no, I'm certainly not joking about the last line. RPGs suck for at least 30% of the population, driving games have reached the pnnacle of their evolution (3D next?), one vs one beatemups are only for those who still have acne.

This thread proves that. 9/10 should be the theoretical maximum on release/review. And then, months later, when sales, online usage, editorials and messageboard opinion are all known, should a 10/10 be given.

(And they should never be awarded to RPGs, Driving games, and one on one beat-em ups).
Er, for those who missed my original post.

This is even worse trolling than my "goldeneye is still the best ever fps + halo is ****" statement, but then, mine was enraging whilst also being true, so I get more points overall.

Oh for crying out loud, these scores are never definitive, complete or represent the opinion of every man, woman or child.

They can't be retrospective and the reviewer can change their mind.

They are a buying guide and nothing more.

Seconded - drmick go hang your head in shame, when it comes to a good story no other genre can match the RPG. And don't give me **** like if you want a good story go read a book, books are so last century - with a video game you don't need to rely on your seriously deficient imagination to get a good idea of what's going on.

Do the books you read have a lot of blank pages then Daragon?

I let out a hearty LOL on reading this. Western RPGs are all sub-Tolkien pointy wizard's hats and Sword of Smiting stuff and J-RPGs make opera look unpredictable with their formulaic storylines and cookie cutter characters.

I also find J-RPGs in particular to be sickeningly and unashamedly sentimental, which is, IMO, why people carry this mistaken notion that RPG stories are somehow better in the first place - they remember the emotional reaction and mistakenly believe it must have been caused by good storytelling / characters / narrative etc rather than contrived manipulation. People remember for example that ZOMFG AERIS DIES!!1 but they seem strangely reluctant to mention the borderline racist stereotype of Barret and his groan-inducing dialogue.
