Because this forum is hardcore. Hardcore people don't need explanations, they recognize all videogame characters instantly from a picture.

By the way, you didn't say who Sackboy was in your own post.

lol, I realised that but I figured you'd have to not know what a playstation is to not know him.

Compared to some generic anime guy, who is somebodies hero because he carries a sword in one hand... ummm

Cute- would I need a stepdown to run him properly?

#1 - FFxi's Lilisette, could have gone to any number of Final Fantasy XI NPC's as they made some excellent heroes and villians in the last couple of years(Shantotto comes a close 2nd, followed by Prishe).

Mentions for Yakuza's Kazuma the most badass man in any game, and KoF's K', Yashiro and Vansessa

Not strictly 'new', but this version of Link took the Zelda series in a wonderful new artistic direction:

And much respect to this guy:

I love me some Tingle, but the best new character by a considerable distance is:

Travis Touchdown from No More Heroes (in case you were struggling)

                  HOW DARE YOU.

Ike is not my hero because he carries his sword in one hand, that just makes him more awesome than he already is. Being the protagonist of one of the best games I've ever played (Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance if you didn't know), saving Crimea from being taken over, uniting the continent and having an attack called Aether where he throws his sword in the air, jumps, catches it and swings down on whichever sucker happens to be standing there then pulls the sword back up, does a backflip and lands where he was standing before is why he is my favorite gaming character of this decade. (Perhaps besides Nosepass...)

What's not to like about that?
