They should have made the best game playing mobile phone on the market (running android) and they would have simply won the handheld wars this gen.

I WOULD BUY THIS!

I'm torn about that one if I'm honest. It's something I've been thinking about because I've been gaming on my iPod Touch a lot recently - not out of choice, I hate touchscreen gaming, but because I always have my iPod on my when I'm out. For this reason, I briefly looked at getting an Xperia Play last week (only ?155 now), though decided against it because bar the Android and PS1 games, there's not really that much for it, plus it is quite an underpowered phone. On paper, a device that has all the advantages of the Xperia Play but with a reasonable amount of grunt in there should be the idea device, right?
But, would Sony releasing what will essentially be a closed platform phone (given games need to be designed for specifications of hardware, even if PS Suite is available for other devices) be a good idea? Android has overtaken the iPhone now and the reason is simple - people appreciate the choice, rather than being locked into a single device. I can't help but feel any Sony gaming-focused phone would become irrelevent as a phone, unless Sony go the Apple route and make earlier iterations of their own hardware irrelevent.
The Vita is vastly more powerful than any phone they could have put out, and their what they're banking on - they're banking on people still wanting a dedicated portable gaming device. Time will tell if that pays off.

Isn't, say, a Galaxy S2 as powerful as a Vita though?
Anyway, to clarify, what I'm saying is an Android device with Playstation specific games as well. So, you can play all the android games everyone else can play, AND Wipeout, god of War, uncharted etc. It's a pointless discussion now of course and I agree that the Experia Play is not a viable solution for a next gen portable gaming device. Too low powered.

That dedicated portable gaming device is the big question really, isn't it? I'm like you with the iPod in that I use it all the time for gaming but not because I like touch controls, just because it's with me all the time (quite like the OS situation in a way - not sure it's that active a choice). But the Vita is so big it doesn't make for an easy device to just have with you at all times even if you want a dedicated portable gaming device. That coupled with the battery life (same issue with 3DS) limits its portability to an extent.
I'm a fan of dedicated devices and yet the lines are blurring more and more and, when we have a certain amount of devices with us at all times, it kind of makes sense to shove them all into one. Even now, I'm tempted to get an iPhone for no other reason than I have my iPod and phone with me at all times and it would make sense to have just one rather than two devices with me.

I was watching a few live streams of japanese launch night consoles being fiddled with and the actual OS impressed me very much, was slick and super responsive. Handy feature of the game capture, being able to take in-game shots at any point on some games, although some people have said doing so on some games (ala) Ridge Racer doesn't suspend the game so it still plays in background and you grind to a halt, nothing a firmware fix can't sort out though no doubt.
It all had a very nice flow to it and actually made me wan't to get one come Feb just so I could have a mess about, Wipeout is tempting me even more though.

Yeah it looks really nice. I totally can't afford one. Why did I buy four PSPs? Really, why? What was I possibly going to do with four? Guessing the resale value on those is pretty low but they might contribute something to a Vita at some point.
The interface looks really nice. I know that doesn't affect the games but still, I like interfaces. My big Vita issue right now is the account thing. I have loads of PSN games and they're split pretty evenly between US and UK. It was messy enough on PSP. I really don't like the idea of being pretty much locked in to one account.
