I know my jp console has it but did any other regions have it?
I have a US 20gb launch model and I'm sure they had the hardware onboard along with the original 60gb launch model. I think they started to remove some of the ps2 hardware with the 80gb when it came out in the US and with the 60gb pal launch.

You might be right there, it looks like both the US 20GB and US 60GB launch models had full hardware based BC:

So, the big question is - do those PS3s with partial PS2 hardware in them (eg - PAL 60GB) have the required PS2 eDRAM in them so games coded to use the full extent of the PS2 frame buffer will run on them via software emulation? My guess is no, which is maybe one of the reasons why Sony stopped developing their software emu for those PS3s with partial hardware based PS2 BC.

This is all old news. The models with partial backwards compatibility (like the launch PAL machines) do not have any PS2 hardware in them whatsoever, all the emulation is done in software. This means no, games that require the PS2's larger frame buffer will never work on them.

The Japanese and US 20GB and 60GB launch models have a PS2-on-a-chip inside them (with the 'Emotion Engine', whatever that means), which means that they have 100% compatibility with their own region of PS2 games.

And yes, those models do command a slightly higher price because of this, although it has fallen since the release of the slim PS3.

Nobody said it was news. I already made it clear in my previous post that I was just re-iterating what has been stated countless times already in this thread for the benefit of those who hadn't been following.

Someone needs to tell the Wikipedia article author to clarify their "Partially software-based PS2 emulation" comment then. The comment links to this as source:

            But even that is ambiguous.

The machines will full hardware-based backwards compatibility (US/JP launch consoles) contain both the PS2 Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesizer, whereas the 'software' backwards compatible models emulate the Emotion Engine, but still contain the Graphics Synthesizer hardware. So it is only partial software emulation.

Ah my mistake ;( I'm crabby, pulling an all nighter writing essays. Wasn't having a go at you bcass anyway if that's what it seemed like, just thought why tf are we discussing this again

As people have said, PS2 emulation seems to pop up every five pages on this thread and it probably wouldn't really matter except that it then goes on for at least two pages each time.

                  So here's my tuppence:

Someone's bound to make a PS2 emulator for the PS3, that's pretty much a given. As to whether or not it'll be any good and how long it will take before Super Hentai Shmup X-2 runs at 60fps is another matter entirely.

If, further on down the line, Sony decides to do customised software PS2 emulation of select titles to sell on PSN, I imagine we'll have a similar situation to PopStation on the PSP, whereby someone will unlock it to play all games but we'll have to bookmark a bunch of compatibility lists for the obvious reasons.

Now that would be pretty cool, but I'm not holding my breath.

Looks like Sony have filed a lawsuit to all those involved according to geohot's website

                      Its a bit late now!
Emus have started to show up as well as posts with ripped games.
This cant be good for future Sony consoles, despite homebrew vs piracy they stand to lose shed loads of income from this. For a good example look at the psp. Will another console from Sony be worth the risk for them.

Yeah it's probably more of a stalling tactic than anything, more so for Geohot as the lawsuit was filed in the US and I think he's the only one from there, the others being from Germany so they should be ok unless Sony can do something in a European court.

Would be interesting if Sony were to win this as it could have a big effect on the hacking scene in general.

It won't have any effect on the hacking scene. All it will teach people is to remain annonymous. It's difficult to have any sympathy for him really, given it was his choice to make his identity public. Obviously trying to make a name for himself, which has now back-fired.

Would it though? Surely it would just force hackers to release hacks anonymously within the hacking community, and let them become public from there.

                              EDIT - Beaten to it
