I wondered if the speed increase was because it was a better drive or just that it dumped a load of crap when it did the transfer. Mine said there was some corrupted stuff that couldn't be moved - no doubt stuff left over from deletions - and just put it down to that.

So the 120GB's are actually faster then? I'd just assumed this one would get just as slow and claggy as time went on.

Is it possible they well allow that in future then? Or does it depend what file system they use for the HDDs?


I might buy a new HDD since you can install games now but can't you just chuck a normal drive in instead of buying a obscenely overpriced MS one?

I've been looking in to this. It seems if you get a specific HDD model you can write to it through your PC with some kind of 360 HDD authentication code, and that will work on your 360. The drive needs to be the same size as one that exists (so 20, 60, or 120gb). And I think all codes are unique, so unless you already have a 120 and can take your code off that, you'll use a duplicate code others are using - which may ultimately result in a Live ban.

Basically you're ****ed - it's a MS HDD or nothing

Keep a look out, the 120 has been appearing cheap in a few places - Comet had them at ?70 recently, sold out now though. That's still a rip off for a 120 gig drive of course...

Larger HDDs are usually faster, due to increased density. I've never compared the 360 HDD specs (20/60/120).

There are a few unconfirmed rumours around at the moment that MS are holding a european press conference next week (22nd) to announce..
new bungie game.
new rare game.
euro price drop.
new dashboard launch date.
All rumour at the moment though, confirmation may come today to say if it's true or not, not holding my breath though.

I can take or leave the avatar stuff, I just want the new design and HD installs.

I think we can safely ignore the 25th September date now ... apparently XBOX Live will be down for 24h on Monday 29th to allow for changes to the service so that it can accomodate the new dash when it launches "later this year".
