Yeah it's because you can't properly connect to live.
It is partially connected to Live, but not enough to download any updates. It's the same for game updates too, it picks them up but won't let you install them

I'm not sure about the price, but if your current 360 doesn't have HDMI, I'd definitely say it's worth trading up. All models have HDMI but the Elite comes with the 120GB drive (?100 on its own) and the official HDMI package (?35), which is needed if you want optical audio while using the connection and don't fancy performing surgery on an existing cable.

Knock off whatever you'd get trading your machine in and it's not a bad deal, especially now that the 120GB drive is actually useful.

          wow! people buy themes?

I would buy themes but then I think "hey wait. two of these and I've got an arcade game or half way towards some new maps for COD/Halo etc" so don't buy any.

jowa from Neogaf claims he was able to play online using the following method those who installed the leak can try this if eager for some multiplayer.

I managed to connect to xbox live with the leaked version installed. Here's what I did:

-launched Gears of War, got prompted for an update
-When you're asked if you want to update, select "no"
-Launch Xbox guide, and return to dashboard, you should now sign in to live automatically.

It's a bit glitchy though: you can't check your messages, you can't access marketplace, still no avatars, but at least you can play online.

Yeah that does work. My stepdad will be pleased, his Xbox has mysteriously updated and he hasn't been able to connect to live......

I only buy ones that are actually decent, which is why Dashboard Themes used to be a useful site. Too many of them are just four random publicity images that make the text unreadable, but the way that the NXE handles legacy themes should hopefully alleviate this.

The downside is that my favourite theme, Bejeweled 2, which looks excellent and I've had since launch, isn't going to work too well on the NXE because of the way it cuts off the bottom

I'm sure I read somewhere that MS said they are launching an avatar store sometime next year and I imagine devs will include avatar unlocks on game discs, like some games currently do with Gamer Pictures.

Does the new dash also let you delete 0 GS retail games? Or just arcade demo's?

That?s right?we?re hooking everyone else up with NXE a bit early. If you signed up and are not prompted, that means you did not enter your console ID properly and you'll have to wait until Wednesday.
A day earlier is still a day earlier

Very smart move on Microsoft's part this "preview program". They've basically just spread the launch over several days and reduced server load!

I don't think this is why they did it at all 30 000 users are no where near the millions numbers that will be updating on the 19th. Its just promotion and publicity mate.

Edit: oh and real world testing..

You'll probably find that the core user base isn't anywhere near the size of total number of users. Also the people that have updated would be the ones that would have went straight on to get the update. I'm guessing the vast majority of 360 owners have no idea there is a dashboard update coming.

Yup, that's exactly where I was coming from. The billions and trillions of regular users won't be hammering the servers on day 1. Where as the thousands of people who would be, have now been appeased (for the most part, anyway).
