It's different for Nintendo as they've sold previous consoles at a profit.

Does this explain why the Wii U games seem expensive? Because they have to be?

From the games perspective I think that's purely retailers attempting to profiteer. They'll make big margins on the launch exclusives but I think the ports are going to be big casualties.

Nintendo will sell the Wii U at a loss when the console launches next month, the company has revealed, despite earlier …

Iwata says in the US Gamestop has run out of preorder slots and has a waiting list of around 250,000 people for that retailer alone

But they had also had major 3rd party support to help games off software and retail royalties. Selling the 3DS at a loss made NCL loss a ton of money and I can't see the serious gamer (the ones who buy more that 5 games a year) opting for a Wii U when it games look or play hardly any better than on their 360 or PS3's .

To me Nintendo don't make/produce enough games In-House or have enough 3rd party support to make money of games sales with Console (non Handheld) hardware ware to that of the SONY or MS business model

Really because there are quite a few 'serious' gamers here .. myself included ... I'm not getting one because of the graphics .. And in all honesty the real power of the WiiU is a complete unknown at the moment.

For me it is very much a ait for Super Smash Bros, Zelda or Mario|Kart kind of affair right now. If they show they have more unique IPs that are decent and not shovelware I am sure to pick one up next year as it is still a great system and will have some games that are all about living room gaming.

Regarding Nintendo's big IPs, when do you reckon we'll actually see Mario Kart, Zelda etc? Wouldn't surprise me if Zelda is the big Xmas 2014 release. Maybe next year we'll get Mario Kart and Smash Bros.?

Yeah you'll just get the 360 or PS3 version since most of the ports add little or nothing

Well I say they might look a little better, but will soon be blown away come the next X-Box and PS and all the same troubles that the Wii had with be had with Wii -U .

I think Mario Kart will come first. Skyward Sword wasn't really that long ago (in Nintendo game terms), but MK Wii came out about five years ago. It's also one of the most consistent sellers Nintendo have - I was in HMV the other day and they were STILL selling brand new copies with the Wii Wheel for ?34.99. So it makes sense to get it out earlier and cash in over a longer period. (Preowned copies were a positively bargainous ?19.99 without the Wii Wheel!)

Although saying that MK7 didn't come out that long ago...who knows, really.

What troubles were those exactly? The Wii sold more than the 360 or the PS3, and Nintendo made a profit on every one. It didn't matter that it didn't have Assassin's Creed or Blops. We might perceive not being able to receive the most state of the art blockbusters as a problem as gamers, but ultimately market forces are what drives these companies' decisions.

Not being able to run most 3rd party games engines for their AAA High budget games .
nd Nintendo made a profit on every one
And yet for the last 2 years its made massive losses and is forecast to make less money than SEGA this year .

I would put to you that MS is making a mint of every 360 sold and thanks to its wide spread support is also making a nice sum on royalties

It didn't matter that it didn't have Assassin's Creed or Blops.
No it only sold 7 million odd copies , it doesn't matter you don't have GTA ECT. Anyone who just had a Wii has their only games machine lost out , unlike say a 360 gamer

None of that is important to me , its about the exclusives with Nintendo so thats what they need to concerntrate on , and as stated its too early to tell at the moment what's going to happen with Next Gen. There is enough power under the hood to keep it going and unless the next gen consoles completely blow away my expectations of them (which isn't high) thee WiiU won't look that much out of place.

Its all about first party and exclusives, Nintendo has a pretty big IP pool it can dip into so hopefully some of that will be seen, even if it means handing off some of the work to third parties.

It won't be blown away. It's not technically possible right now, or in two years. Not unless they manage to cram a huge PC rig down to console size and get it to a $500 price point.

The only option they have is to throw gimmicks and stuff into the mix. You'll have amazing innovations such as Kinect 2 to look forward to rather than 25x the raw power of what we have now. It's just not affordable, or even required.

                              Of course it is

Huge Rig ? You can get laptops with far more power than the Wii U and I'm sure uncle Bill will take a hit on the hardware to make sure the Next Box comes in at a decent price and I think they'll leave the gimmicks to Nintendo myself

Like with the Wii it be the magical game every 2 or 3 years or so . That's not good enough I mean Pikmin III was meant to come out on the Wii and yet its still not ready and its not like MS or SONY won't have exclusive of their own

Well that will need to change for the WiiU to be a sucess, I think we can all agree on that.
