Since GTA IV, there's a navigator on the map which tells you where to go on the missions and you can set your own way-points on the map and it will guide you there too. All the places of interest (shops, bars, activities etc.) are also marked on the map. Don't know how much more obvious you can make it really.

I never finished GTAIV. For me it got boring fast and the main character wasn't interesting. Plus I despised the constant phone calls and other rubbish getting in the way. Technically it was amazing for the time but as a game I don't think it was up to it.
I also hated the multiplayer. Mainly due to the rubbish shooting mechanics.
I'm actually hyped for this one though. Firstly, great main characters and straight off I can see they're all going to be hilarious playing off one another. Secondly, since GTAIV we've had Max Payne 3 and Red Dead Redemption both of which are stellar titles in their own right but equally offer a glimpse of how Rockstar have managed to forward the genre since IV.
If this has the open world beauty of RDR and tighter shooting mechanics from MP3 (which it looks to have judging by the vid) its going to make multiplayer actually a worthwhile experience this time around.

I've just dusted off my gta 4. Bloody hell man! I now realised why i couldn't be arsed with this!
1st off, my save was corrupted so had to start again - no biggie, as i hadn't got that far before any way.
Then came the pain that this game is!
Frustrating,
Cars that handle like ****e,
Poor story,
Unforgiving,
Cops that are onto you in seconds,
Having to bank into my turning when on foot,
Stupid dating missions.
I'm back to where i was last time i chucked this back on the shelf. I'm determined to continue but its hard work!
I hope gta v will be more fun & less realistic this time round

Really blown away by this, I was getting quite tired of the repetitive nature of GTA, and allot of the time I'd never really do the missions and just mess around.
But looking at that game play trailer has really filled me with confidence that Rockstar have totally revamped everything, and this time round I actually want to play all the missions through and through... and that online mode? I mean... wow... very excited to see how that could play out.
