      Watacockup.

The way that you have to run WiiWare and old VC games via the special Wii menu is lame. I do like how you don't need a user account to use the majority of Nintendo's online services though - not have to go through a long winded form-filling process to use online features of the 3DS has been so so great.

Its hardly a cockup ... What else were they supposed to do exactly. You are lucky there is even a 'Wii Mode' in the console at all, given whats happening to BC in the next gen consoles.

You think this is bad wait till you turn on your 720 and find out you can't play any of your XBLA arcade titles at all ...

Pff... still doesn't make it right and it doesn't seem to be an issue with Steam where there's god knows how many hardware configurations to account for. There still going to get money from new people buying the game and I bet it's not that much of an issue to get working anyway. Greedy Nintendo.

Um, give people free Wii U versions of the VC games they've already bought as they come out? lol

I don't feel lucky. I don't even own a Wii U. If I got a free Wii U from Nintendo that would make me feel lucky ^.^

              Fixed that for you.

Yeah it sucks. And tbh I doubt I will pay again except for titles that I can't do without, like Cybernator.

OMG! I hope that doesn't mean Microsoft/Sony will actually release a load of interesting new games for me to play on my new console. I only bought a Wii U so I could have the exact same experience I had on my Wii :/ If my 720 wasn't just a more expensive 360 at launch I'd be gutted!

Neither the PS3 or 360 did BC with their preceding gen all that well (or at all on the newer PS3s) and no-one cares about it now? Nintendo do it because it's not all that hard, the Wii was an innovation in design and controls the hardware wasn't anymore complex than a Gamecube and it's not like VC releases are akin to Okami HD or even Banjo Kazooie on 360, if a Wii can emulate an N64 game (warts and all) so can a Wii U.

The Wii U would be amazing if you had a "virtual library" which organised your Wii VC games by console or chronologically. It could even download basic info/images about the game (that's on the VC website already) but Nintendo couldn't be bothered. Now they're going to make us buy the games again and we'll only be able to play them on the Wii U controller screen (which compared to the Retina displays on my iPhone, iPad and MBP might as well be an animated Lite-Brite display).

Doing the bare bones of something doesn't mean it's beyond critique. I imagine Sony/Microsoft aren't doing BC because they're not able to do it upto a standard they are satisfied with (for whatever reasons). I love Nintendo (I don't sound like I do because I get irritated by the irrational, "we won't leave a negative point unargued" standpoint of others) but I personally would have swapped BC for lovingly made Day 1 VC releases in HD with the OPTION to play on the controller's screen. Hell I'm not even bothered about 1080p even the Homebrew Wii emulator via 480p made SNES ROMS look fantastic, worlds better than the Wii VC releases do.

If Nintendo had some kind of account system like PS3 and 360 they could actually implement this quite easily. But they don't, so they won't sadly.

Comparing it to Steam is just daft, you are talking about a PC platform (in processor terms) that hasn't changed in nigh on 30 years. And there are plenty of Steam games that don't work on certain setups. Simple fact is that unless you include the hardware from the previous console you are always going to have this issue.

As others have allouded to though Nintendo should at least meet people half way. TBH I couldn't care less about VC games anyway, as they are well overpriced, and much cheaper (i.e. free) on a PC.

Some people spent hundreds on Virtual Console (myself, probably ?30). Its really crappy that nintendo STILL haven't sorted account based access. I won't be getting in on it anyway. Would prefer link my laptop to the TV and emu that **** than support nintendo's failure.

But isn't there a trasfer tool on the Wii/Wii U that allows migration of VC games from Wii to Wii U, or does that transfer save data only?

What the hell are you going on about!? For a start Nintendo are not forcing anyone to rebuy their games and secondly the VC games on the eShop work fine on the TV as well as on the gamepad. If you actually had a Wii U you would know this. Ive spent well over ?150 on Virtual Console releases and Im very happy with the service, I managed to transfer all of my games to my Wii U without any problems at all and they look great running through HDMI, a much bigger improvement to how they looked on my Wii. As for the upgrade cost, Ive got no problem at all with it and think the price they are asking for is quite reasonable, at the end of the day gamepad support wasnt included in the games when I first bought them and I can still play them fine without any problems now. Gamepad support is an optional upgrade that isnt that expensive but at least I have the option, if I dont want to pay for the upgrade I wont.

As for the account system, It would be nice to have one but for the Wii U I dont think its a huge issue, the console will be good for another 5 years or so and if it breaks Ill just send it to Nintendo to get it fixed, I wont lose any of my purchases. The only people it will be a problem for is those that regularly sell their consoles and then buy them back again. Comparing it to Apples Appstore is stupid as apple refreshes their hardware every year so its necessary to have that sort of account system to transfer purchases. Nintendo allows full transfers of any online games you have bought and theres full backwards compatibility, Microsofts next system is looking unlikely to offer that option and we will hopefully find out tonight what Sonys plans are but if its like the PS3 then I wouldnt expect 100% bc either.

Will be interesting to see if these same people bitching about Nintendos VC service will still be as vocal if it turns out all your XBLA and PSN purchases wont be usable on Durango or PS4? Theres still plenty of room for improvement as always with the VC but in terms of retro gaming (legally) its still way ahead of the others.

Yes there is, it transfers everything; games and saves. Only bad thing is that you need your Wii and Wii U hooked up at the same time.

Oh its a mess lets make no bones about it ... Purchases should be on an account basis, simple as. So what happens if say your WiiU gets nicked from your house, and you don't know what the serial no was? You are then completely buggered.
