Firstly, to not be disappointed by the PS4 I'm expecting a few new franchises, one of which to appear on launch and a console that works and isn't full of issues like the Wii U. Sony at this point has a lot of brilliant franchises and lots of teams to bring a decent amount of exclusive content to their platform too - not to mention better support by 3rd parties...

Well actually that's simply down to the developer, Uncharted for example is an amazing looking game and that's just running on a PS3. Journey is another one. PC games, especially on my rig do look amazing but consoles have the ability to look amazing too - it's all down to the developer. Quite frankly Nintendo have been really lazy with their games of late - not just NSMBU. Skyward Sword was also pretty bad and played like an old game too. Where is the new experiences? a 2D game that can be done on the Wii isn't why I spent ?300...
You are assuming a lot there ... Whilst I agree I dont think there will be many (if any) AAA title's for the WiiU next year, that doesn't mean there won't be any decent games. Any Pikmin game is better than no Pikmin game, and at the moment we simply don't know what else might be coming out. And currently there is a decent amount of games at launch one way or the other, even if you are only fixated on one of them.

Let's not forget all those 'Brilliant franchises' took an age to come out on the PS3, and I don't see them as particularly brilliant, apart from the LBP franchise Sony have been peddling pretty the same stuff they did on the PS2 (i.e. GOW, GT etc). I can see the PS4 coming out with minimal software or at the most a Ridge Racer, MGS and a MotorStorm game ... Wow that will be original ... Uncharted may be 'amazing' to look at but it needs the gameplay to back it up, and whilst the PS3 games are OK (Uncharted 2 being the best), another round of them for the PS4 is hardly original.

The PS4 will have issues like any new piece of kit, that's part and parcel these days I am afraid, everything is in ''beta' one way or the other when it comes out, that won't be any different for the NextBox either.

Blimey if you are this critical of the WiiU launch, what are you going to be like when the next round of consoles appear, because I doubt they will meet your lofty expections.

I've had a bit of a muck around with mine but haven't actually played much yet as I'm having a bit of a ball ache getting it all working as I'd want it.

Does anyone know how you can get it to do video out via HDMI, but audio via component through the multi-AV? From what I've tested so far it doesn't seem to do it at all. If need be it seems component video will do 1080p too, but it's an absolute nightmare having to buy massive extension leads to route video in one direction and audio in the other.

Aside from all of that, it seems a nice piece of kit. Nintendoland seems infinitely more appealing than Wii Sports ever was, and a lot of the blending between game and social is actually pretty neat.

Once I'm up and running I'll be having a crack at Tank!^3 and ZombiU - might grab Mario whilst I'm at it too. Does anyone have any recommendations for downloadable titles that are there right now?

Why would I want a WiiU to play games that are on other systems? AND BETTER!!!

Uncharted, Infamous, Little Big Planet, Resistance, Heavy Rain, Journey and Unfinished Swan were all new franchises for this generation just off the top off my head. We'll just have to agree to disagree about Uncharted's gameplay as this isn't the thread - but I will say it was unique at the very least, something Nintendo have been incapable of providing since Pikmin and Luigi's Mansion on the GC.

Probably, but the fact at the moment is Nintendo are behind the other consoles in basic features and usability, which is unacceptable when you consider how long ago they came out. If those machines are a little buggy with new additions to the UI - you can understand because it's NEW. Nintendo merely had to copy the other consoles and somehow managed to mess that up...

I don't think expecting something NEW from Nintendo is a lofty expectation really. NSMBU is a poor excuse for a new generation of console. It's not pushing it in the slightest. If that satisfies your ?300 purchase I'm happy for you. Just don't expect me to be so easily pleased.

@Shozuki - I think it's honestly just safe to say you aren't target audience for the machine. Horses for courses.

It's a little bit worrying when my use of Miiverse ends up bordering on my Twitter addiction. Woke up and before I left work, I *had* to turn the machine on just to take a quick look at my notifications. Oh dear...

That just seems a little lazy to me. Surely that can be fixed in a later firmware or something? Either way it's going to be a pain in the ass in the interim.

I think my other frustration right now is about controllers. If I want to play multiplayer (Tank Tank Tank and NSMB in particular) can I get pro controllers, or do I have to hook up a sensor bar and use Wiimotes? It just doesn't seem to be very clearly spelled out anywhere.

Nice debate enjoying reading. While hypothetical would be interesting to see what Wii U has up its sleeve when the big boys come to play at E3. Would they make an add on like 64DD do you think? Wonder if Nintendo will unleash all their AAA stuff when PS4 etc come around.

You are pleased though, with Zombi U at least. Being pleased with one game on a console launch is good.

The last time I was pleased with more than one launch game was way back with the SNES.

Just because NSMBU might be a bit crap (which you were entirely expecting pre-purchase) that doesn't mean you can lay into the system itself, which others are finding to be a stroke of genius.

I'm genuinely interested in how you will react when the PS4 rolls around, for perhaps double the cost, and will only offer graphics that are on par with your current PC rig. As well as only having around one really decent game at launch (probably Ridge 8).

Well I am sure there is stuff in the pipeline that we will hear about eventually, however Nintendo do need to get a move on and show something other than what we know about already.

At this rate there will be sod all to play by the middle of next year on the WiiU. Personally not an issue from a gaming point of view as there are plenty of 360 games I want to complete (or in some cases take out of the wrappers!) before next gen starts proper.

Still Nintendo needs to get a move on and show something, or at least give us some sort of hint as to what might be around the corner for this time next year. I am kind of hoping that all 'those' franchises (we know the ones) that we want to see sequels / updates are all least in the works. We also need to see original stuff as well of course, and a decent amount of Eshop titles would help as well.

And of course if they can get some Gamecube games on the VC (or Eshop) then that would be a plus as well as long as they are reasonably priced.

E3 should be a cracker next year considering what should be being shown, Nintendo need to get in there beforehand though and steal some of the next gen thunder.

Are we expecting GC Games on the eShop or was that just a thought of yours? If so that could be an excellent feature.

The fact I could end up with my fav N64, GC, Wii and Wii U games all on one box would be worth the money ten fold. Hopefully will be able to play them all on the pad soon too.

Reggie E3 announcement make it happen!!

I just want F-Zero GX with online and motion controls (in order to nullify snaking, somewhat). I don't want them to risk defiling the legacy with a new game, unless it's the exact same team again.

Reasonably priced? Pfft... If I had the ca$h I'd single-handedly kick start that.

How can you not love Nintendoland that package alone is more fun than most games released this year, plenty of single player and multiplayer fun .
Mario also very similar and soon after nsmb2 and a tad easy. is still a great game and looks beautiful in HD,
Zombie U is of the best games of the year imo , only 10 hours in keeps getting better and better and it feels like i have barely made any story progress
those 3 exclusives alone are worth the price of a wii u imo.
+ you have the new console experience, the neat features like miiverse, the tv remote

we have plenty to look foward to until the spring,

                            Pikmin
                            Game and Wario?
                            aliens
                            lego city
                            scribblenauts
                            Monster hunter
                            Game and wario
                            wii fit u ?

Please don't mention Wii Fit or Lego on the same page as F-Zero GX.

                              Thanks.

Yeah but the ps4 will surely be a more solid long term investment... i mean its all well and good being pleased for the short term when 360 and ps3 are still pumping out games using old engines, but what when the two next gens arrive next year, and unreal engine 4 etc become the norm? man it aint gonna be pretty. The old gen ports will run dry soon enough, and 3rd party devs better have a good install base to work with, or it might as well be a machine to drag out at christmas with nintendo releasing barren release schedules every year, and the main games being mario party 27.

With this at mind even at your proposed ?600 launch, the ps4 sounds a good prospect.

But then If the machine sells well over chistmas and continues into the new year then it wont be a problem. Nintendo justr need a couple of BIG games in spring/summer and i doubt pikmin is it. The price however IS a barrier right now, if i cant bring myself to buy one because of price, then the amount of money tight families who may pass up the opportunity i imagine will be great.
