I've wondered in the past if Sony made a bit of a mess of the Vita's messaging at launch, here in the UK at least (no idea about Japan/elsewhere).

They seemed to have this very "Apple" approach of making it seem like the cool new thing, when in reality they should've doubled down on the hardcore gamer userbase. It's still the only mainstream twin-stick handheld console.

I don't know whether it was down to doubling down to focus on getting PS4 out the gate strong or not but after the first 6-8 months a sense set in quick that Sony felt like it had to sell itself to be supported. Thankfully there's been that upturn in japan to keep the jrpg fans around etc I think that's all that will come now, Sony will assumedly keep it running for years and years so it'll eventually climb in total sales enough thanks to those steady fans but I'll honestly be astounded if they ever make another handheld.

It depends. It seemed to second only to 3DS in shelf space when I was on my holidays last November, it is really massive over there if the PS4/XB1/WiiU-QOL fall on their arse why not another handheld it would just sadly probably not see a release outside of Japan

It's kind of why my interest faltered again with it. It's no secret it's possibly the best handheld machine ever but we're long past the point it really being justifiable to point people to spend money on it if they aren't in love with remote play or its steady japanese titles. It's much wiser to wait for Sony to pull its plug and then get one for even cheaper than it is now. It's clearly a dead format in Sony's eyes and only embarassment in admitting it is keeping them from making it official in the US and EU. Amazing, amazing hardware but nothing AAA is coming and nothing is going to revive it, a fate WiiU is perilously close to following.
          This.

Sony really ought to have quit while they were "ahead" with the PSP.

            Shelf space? So what?

Unit sales wise, 3DS has battered Vita in Japan pretty much all day every day.

On Vita with PSP games, I keep on letting my thumb on the touch screen to make the options appear but it doesn't appear anymore.
Any idea how to make it appear?

I believe now you just hold the PlayStation button to get the options screen up.

Well spent about 5 1/2 hrs on god of war and it plays pretty well. The frame rate is 25-30 fps and it does have some slow down when there are quite a few enemies on screen at once but not that regular. The graphics are a bit jaggy in places but overall it's a good conversion as the touch screen moves are simple enough. The cut scenes that use the in game engine are fine but the cgi movies are rather crude looking. The music is excellent but the sound effects are of a low quality but nothing game breaking or disastrous
If you loved the first two games and fancy playing it on your portable I'd recommend it

Hence why I said second not first

To be fair, your comment made it sound like shelf space made it a close-run thing between 3DS and Vita in Japan, as if it was a key factor that mattered.

I don't care about "AAA" games tbh.
That's what my PS4 is for...

Am loving it for the run of quirky games...have 7 import preorders and want at least 5 more already available.
Plus a huge backlog I already own.

Don't mind the ports either as I wasn't much of a Sony gamer from PS1-3 so they are all new to me too.

Haven't enjoyed a handheld as much since the original gameboy or PC engine GT.

I think if you go into vita with the same attitude as the WiiU, ie it has good games already but just don't expect the earth of support for it, then you'll be very surprised at the quality already on it.

That said, anyone waiting for AAA on their ps4 or xbone should just get Tearaway right now, more imagination and quality than either console will likely ever get.

I've bought more games for my Vitas than my 3DS this year...But I've spent more on my 3DS.
I'm definitely in the "great little console" group, despite the price of memory cards for it. PS+ has given me a chance to try all the games released before I bought it. Stonking discounts have given me the rest.

You can keep your AAA titles.. I tried Uncharted and other big name titles on the Vita, but nothing has kept me glued to the machine like Olliolli and TxK have done the past couple of weeks. Both games are works of genius, and i paid just over a fiver for both of them together (although TxK cost me an additional ?3 after I was compelled to buy the soundtrack).

Tearaway was my GOTY last year but having unlocked 100% there is nothing to get me to go back to it, unlike the two mentioned above.

A Clone In The Dark is also brilliant!
