Tickle, i'd say go for Xenoblade on the wii, it will feel like your playing a mix of FF11/12 without the macro managment and active character switch, which speeds things up but also makes a couple of the NM/boss fights be really ****ing annoying when computer moves your healer into AOE range.

I've currently been playing it for the last 2 months after buying it 2 christmas's ago after not being able to get over the Wii's **** graphic filters, but if i can play FF11(and still think it looks good in Hi-Res's) i can play Xenoblade i told myself, and it worked.

I did try and get it working on Dolphin, it looks fantastic but there just to much sound lag regardless of "patches" and config's to warrent sticking with it, so i went back to blurro vision on the wii.

Nier? It's like 5 quid and really does it's own thing.

Wizardry Online.....it's free and will run on older pc's.

Actually the closest to a real RPG are games like Fallout 1 & 2 and games like Baldur's Gate and Planescape, where you can affect the gameworld and which feature choices and consequences in some manner.

Valkyria Chronicles is not a "roleplaying game", it's a strategy game. There isn't a world to explore in Valkyria Chronicles, it's a series of combat scenarios one after the other.

Depends on what games has the OP not played? I'd say Dragon Quest series is quite close to what he'll be looking for. I don't really like them but a lot of people do. I also love Tales of series. Vesperia is on the 360 so start from there.

Personally for rpgs last one besides ninokuni that i really liked was keroro rpg. Funny script & the battles were really fun & a crapload of secrets. Loved the special attacks that were basically calling forth characters from other namco games to attack for you.

Still play it even now, a recommended rpg

I guess that means Resonance of Fate isn't an RPG either then. Unless you consider clicking on a load of hexagons exploring a world.

I haven't played Resonance of Fate. I assume it does have areas to explore though in some manner?

Anyway, the OP asked for a "proper RPG like old-school Final Fantasy" which Valkyria Chronicles clearly isn't.

Also agree that Xenoblade is fantastic too, playing it at 1080p on Dolphin is wonderful.
^^^ This! Ignore Xbox 360 RPGs and go for Dragons Quest 8 PS2 or Xenoblade on the Wii, unless you have a PS1?

Looks pretty cool/humor ridden. I feel like there's a lot of influence from Tales of games. I'll order this provided it's affordable.

Keroro RPG seems to be out of stock and the only copy available on eBay is 75 USD. Other option is to get from AmazonJP. Anyway, when it comes to RPGs I'd say Tales of series are kind of niche and geared towards freaks who like Anime and other Japanesey style over the top otaku stuff. I like it sometime but if one is looking for something like Final Fantasy, they won't find it from KeroroRPG.

Do you like FF12, but want it faster and easier with MMO tropes(massive play areas,day/weather cycles, NPC active hours, crap tons of side quests, NM hunts, "town building") and a ton of shortcuts like quickwarps/time changes whenever you want for free, everyone levels regardless of seeing action, equipment is basically the mmo system with gem slots(you craft where ever you want).

As for the story its, its alright, pretty much small beginnings, tragedy, revenge and chosen hero stuff.. im only halfway in i think after getting past Big Tree, what keeps me going mostly is the character interation is pretty good for a JRPG and more in line with what anime is churning out nowerdays.
