    RE: Halo 3

The replay ability to view any in game footage or online match from any angle is one of the most overlooked 'engine' achievements in last gen IMO. I am no programmer but I imagine the ability to look at any in game asset from any angle on the fly require some serious programming skills.

It's possibly not as hard as you would think. With immediate mode rendering hardware the whole scene is rendered before culling takes place to determine what is displayed to the viewer. All the info is there to be used as required.

I'd imagine it was very much down to the way that the whole game had net-code, so the replays were simply dumps of this.

People always say that about PC games . Like I said before I never thought anything less of my DC becasue Quake 3 on the system couldn't match the PC screen res or 60 fps , never thought the 360 was let down because it couldn't handle Half Life 2 at the screen res or the 60 fps (that even my old **** PC could coupe with)
i really don't see your point here mate. if you are fine with next gen consoles that don't manage to offer enough power to match the performance of a current low entry PC that costs roughly the same then just say so.

I'm just saying you could have used that very same argument with the DC generation, the XBox generation and then the 360 generation did that mean they were terrible consoles ? .

I really don't get why people like you even feel the need to compare consoles to the PC's; One's called a PC and the other a console for very good reasons and I never really got upset that my 360 couldn't match 60 fps and the screen res of what an average PC systems could be that even with the early ports of games like FEAR, Quake 4, COD 2 and so on (in most cases lacked either the speed and screen rest of what average cheapish PC could display or in most cases both).

really? both DC and Xbox offered incredible new experiences right from the start (e.g. Soul Calibur or Halo, both 480p) and proved they were a huge step over Saturn and PSX. the first generation of 360 games could have done better but at least offered a further boost in resolution and overall visual fidelity (e.g. CoD2 in 600p). also the gap to high end PC gaming wasn't that big as it is today, or was it?

well, maybe it's about time we start to compare. because if you look closely consoles get more and more PC-like (big hard drives, online-only games, patches and endless updates for beta-state releases. and also vice versa - just look at Steam.

Again Soul Calibur wasn't a launch title for the DC but came out some 8 months latter . Day 1 DC owers in Japan got the play the likes of VF3Tb, Pen Pen, July and Godzilla (people need to remember that ). Lets see whats comes out for the XBox One and PS4 . HALO looked stunning but then so does Battlefiled 4 on the PS4 and it runs at 60 fps and 1080p (HALO only run at 30 fps). And the likes of BF 4, Killzone 4 , Ryse are huge steps over what the 360 or PS3 could handle - I mean they can barley handly a cut down 30 fps BF 4

well, maybe it's about time we start to compare. because if you look closely consoles get more and more PC-like (big hard drives, online-only games, patches and endless updates for beta-state releases. and also vice versa - just look at Steam
I don't really compare a PC to a laptop, I don't compare my tablet to a Laptop and never been one to compare 'console' to a PC . Both are different and it's silly to compare both imo

My word the Japanese DC launch was awful. Should never have got one so soon!

Well imo it was better than the PS2 Jp launch, other than the Mega CD I can't think of a more pathetic launch line up and where one did a little too out class what came before . That said, bar Super Monkey Ball the Jap launch of the Cube was pants , same for the Wii and Wii U and the less said about the Japanese launches of the Mega Drive, Saturn the better.
The best systems launches from the 1st day they were available to buy on the market (be that Japan or the West) was the XBox , Snes, PSP and N64 . All the rest has been pretty dire imo . If people here want to count hardware launches months (or even years) after the console 1st hit the market in the world , then it doesn't get any better than the DC launch in the USA or the XBox in the UK imo.

But then the USA launch of the the DC was 10 months after the DC hit Japan and the UK XBox was some 4 months after the system 1st hit the Market . Lets see what software the X Box One and PS4 get some 4 to 10 months down the Line . Who knows by the time the XBox hit Norway capcom_suicide may think it's one of the best launch line ups around lol

I'm pretty sure this thread used to be about Titanfall, not resolutions and previous console launches!

Oh I thought the JP launch of the MD was very exciting. Coming from the mastersystem, and going into Shekhana in Tottenham Court road to see this new 16 bit system blew my mind...those were the days!!!

Graphically it was a massive set up (but there so is Ryse and the likes of BF 4) , but I wouldn't call Super Thunder Blade or SH II as must have games, or good games

                            Titanfall is 720p
I don't care about that myself It's just that the whole game looks so last gen and I wonder how much is down to the use of Source engine

                              Look like somebody bit!
I think that has very little to do with it , by the same token Halo 4 would look the same as Halo 1
and Gears of War Judgement would look like Unreal Tournament.

The vast majority of the games out at the moment look like Current gen games, and that is because most of them either have their roots in current ten technology because they exist across formats and generations.
At this point in time strangely, the graphics are what are least important. I just need some games that don't feel like games I've already played 10x over, I'm hoping Titanfall can deliver on that if it cannot deliver on "next-fen" graphics.

Source engine is about 100 years old.

No idea why this runs at 720p.
