Do we yet know why the xbox one is so massive and still has an external brick? Last I checked consensus was simply that MS were determined to not have any overheating issues (a damn good reason) but I wonder if any of those tech sites have stripped the new consoles down yet and had a good look at the innards?

I understood it was similar to the Xbox 360 S in design (i.e. the better design aspects). So lots of space, large fan and heat-sink over the CPU/GPU chip and like the 360 stuck to using a separate powerbrick - which I guess worked for various reasons.

I know there have been teardowns of the console on a few of the sites: https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Xbox+One+Teardown/19718

Having spent more time with it tonight it seemed better bur maybe I just tolerated it more. It's definitely the fan on the right-hand side of the machine and based on the sheer number of open grills it doesn't surprise me I can hear it when close to the machine.

I think Evil Boris hit the nail on the head, in that based on what I've read and seen on Youtube there appears to be fans that are near silent or extremely loud. Sometimes a clear fault like something catching a fan blade. My guess was that given this probably isn't the best quality fan in the world it's slight luck of the draw as to whether you get one operating within it's specifications, although probably the majority are near-silent.

I am sensitive to noise so can couldn't stand the original 360 and always installed games to disc, run water cooling in my PC and can hear the fans in my iMac (considered by most to be whisper quiet which to fair it is). I agree with the poster above it's definitely quieter than the PS3 or 360 Slim (under load).

        Well I hope they're both better designed/built than the mk1 ps3 and 360 were.

Considering the One is designed to be on most of the time (for TV) I would imagine it would be. The PS4 does worry me though as they must have cheaped out somewhere to get it out at that price.

Maybe but making consumer electronics is what Sony do No kinetic or any camera must have kept the cost down and the only reason ms put ddr3 in the xbox is because no one predicted the price drop of gddr

Article on the costs of each console here, don't know how correct it is of course and it was written end of last year.

The Xbox One cost $471 to make. The PS4 costs $381.
The battle between the Microsoft  Xbox One and the Sony PlayStation 4 is well under way. Actual sales for the first selling season won’t be announced for a while. And it probably won’t be until next year until we find out which console is really winning the next-generation sales competition. But thanks to market research […]

Nice little promotion from MS for some US 360 owners to upgrade, a $75 voucher of Xbox One store credit.

                  I got one!

                  Not really

Also have you seen there's an HDD Eraser app on the 360 so you can sell it without risk of something?

So the XboxOne download game updates as well as system updates while in InstantOn mode right?
When does it do the downloads? I thought it did them overnight (the xbox website says so), but there was a 1.7GB BF4 update, so earlier today I put it in InstantOn ready for the morning, but I just had a look and it has downloaded it already (at least, it's not telling me about the update any more and the load screens look different). I don't really want the Xbox caning my connection during the day

It just downloads them as they are rolled out, day or night when the machine is on or off.

Ok, although hopefully from tomorrow it won't matter so much (BT engineer coming round to turn on FTTC). My mobile phone only works over the internet and I have to ask the kids to stop watching netflix / youtube when the phone rings or I dial out otherwise it goes flakey. A full bore update would kill it.

aren't there some QOS settings you can put on your router to stop that happening?

FTTC must be pretty exciting for you in that case!

With FTTC you wont have any issues moving forward ... plenty of bandwidth for everyone!

Yep, getting a stiffy now tbh.
And I have set up QOS, which improved it but not perfect

lol have you gone back to your school boy days Charles, if were bringing back the phrase "getting a stiffy", can we also bring back "chinny reckon" doing PE in your pants, Baking Powder Submarines, John Craven?s Newsround, and writing the word boobies on a calculator.
