It was basically a NES controller if you turned it sideways. Not actually that different to what Nintendo released in the past. If you plugged in a nunchuk it felt a bit like an N64 pad.
Plus the Wii sold about 5x as many units as the Gamecube, which did have a 'normal' controller.
