SH1 is on both US and UK PSN. The PAL version is optimised 50hz so runs full speed and no borders. The only difference is the anteaters as the early enemies instead of the demon babies- loses some synbolism but it's functionally the same, I'd be happy with the PAL version.

The PC versions of 2 and 3 are pretty good too- they are always an option if you can manage?

Also, aren't the JP copies full English anyway?

No idea. I thought they'll be like Resident Evil, with English audio but Japanese text.

And, thanks, I checked before and SH1 is on UK PSN. Demon babies would be cool but it's that big an issue because I met them when I played it the first time.

Goddammit. Not gonna lie, all this chatter has put me in the mood to revisit the series. The first game, even at the time of release, never really grabbed me. The second was brilliant though, properly resonated and stays with you. For some reason I never spent much time with 3 and 4. Homecoming, I tried, but came across poor. Shattered Memories, didn't really click with me either for some reason. Downpour was alright, not really scary or up to the rep but not awful. Reading up on the HD post patch collection they're still off so PC seems the best route

I have Japanese releases of Silent hill from 1 - 4. IIRC Silent Hill 1, had English audio but Japanese text MrKirov.

If I am not mistaken the Japanese releases of Silent hill 2, 3 and 4 had English audio and switch able text between English and Japanese.

As an option, Silent Hill 2 was also released on the original Xbox, and had an extra side mission

Don't forget that Silent Hill Origins on the PSP and PS2 exists to 'compliment' Silent Hill 1...

Well I can confirm that JP SH4 definitely had English voice and text because it's the only version I ever owned. That extra SH2 XBox mission is also on the Platinum/Greatest Hits PS2 release on PS2. You're not really missing anything if you don't play it though.

The story in Origins didn't actually fall in line with SH1 either, strangely.

It was made as some form of accompaniment, but actually only the surface of it - stuff like character names and occupations made sense- absolutely everything else didn't match with Silent Hill 1 at all- it was like they matched the story from memory, and didn't take into account any of the files or understood what was actually happening.

Born from a wish was the extra scenario in the Xbox/PS2 plat version. I enjoyed it, but it's only an hour long.

Randombs said he can have the PAL version of SH1, and if 2-4 have English voice and text (I thought they did too) then he's all good for the JP copy!

Also, CTN- do it!! Revisit them these days, you may well enjoy then!! They're cheap enough to try I think

Just had a check. SH3 is pretty cheap and easy to pick up on PC and reviewed well so might go for that first. SH2 is crazy expensive, 4 is pricey too

3 is also the best PC port of the three. I hear 4 is pretty bad with like 15fps on cutscenes. I would get the widescreen mods before playing them.

I hope that they get decent steam ports sometime down the line but I guess its unlikely.

Bugger, more research and it seems like the SH games have several issues with new rigs as they begin slipping behind the tech. SH2 for def is out as saving is one of the problems. Puts me firmly back in HD Collection territory. Ah well. Even spoiled I'll have played worse lol

The first game actually looks really nice on PS2 with texture smoothing enabled.

Can you not dig out, access or borrow a PS2 at all?

Don't let it be your first experience of them, please

PS2 is no longer an option sadly. I'd probably start with SH2 which I've gone through before so in theory I shouldn't notice the issues too much by the time I get to 3 as I'll be used to it. Only other option for me would be to try PCSX2 but the collection is much less of a faff

Read the link I posted above if you eat to see what you'll be putting up with first though.
I'd rather you played them than didn't if there is no other option, but know what you're getting into first!

Post patch they sound... Bareable. It is without doubt the most baffling collection project though. Especially skipping 1 and 4
