But in other ways, it was cool, like the more complex ammo system n' stuff. Is the term 'a curate's egg'? High quality, no doubt, though.
I loved Resi 3. It pretty much maxed the PS1 out graphically and was a great way to end the raccoon city story - Resi to me is more of a trilogy as the rest were too different. Nemesis was a great idea but I've always thought putting weapons in zombies hands is stupid as ****. That last section in Resi 4/ Resi 5 when they're wondering around with ak47s... I mean... why? just get real soldiers who can shoot straight if that's your ****ty plan.

SPOILERS! I still haven't ever played 4. It's okay, I'm joking - at this point it's probably socially acceptable to talk about stuff from the end of a game that must be more than 10 years old at this point. I'm planning on moving to 3 once I finish this replay of 2 (on the second scenario now). Maybe I'll eventually play 4 at some point...

I think 4 progressed residential evil nicely without ruining it. Great game in its own right too

I think the best comparison is what i mentioned with Res 1 being Tomb Raider 1 (the game) and Res 2 being Tomb Raider 2. Not a like for like comparison though.

            Yep. Perfectly.

As for spoilers, the story is so wank it doesn't really matter!

4 was the first good Resident Evil game.

Claire finds... "A goblet. Nothing extraordinary." Yes it is. It's supposed to be a police station. Why is there a museum in it?

The canonical story is that Brian Irons was on the take from Umbrella, and was getting paid mega bucks. He was obsessed with Art, statues and other finery, and desperately wanted to be part of high society. He turned the police station into his own personal art gallery to impress the Umbrella/Raccoon elite in order to be invited into the inner circle he craved to be a part of. It's one of the reasons his daughter was dressed in a ball gown, he would hold parties there, and try to marry his daughter off to one of the young rich Raccoon suitors.

It's one of the reasons the police station was so easily overrun, he moved weapons caches around, and held them in non strategical locations in order to make room for his prize possessions.

Claire was also in regular contact with Chris, who infamously hated Irons and argued with him before and after the Arklay mansion incident- and Claire was informed by Chris of his obsessions and what he was doing to the station and department. IIRC, it's not the first time Claire had been inside the station, so she may have seen it before.

I ****ing love the Resi storyline, it annoys me when people say it's pants!!

Hmmm... I think I read a file that said they moved the weapons around due to some threat of attack. Or maybe that was ammunition. But either way, the police station museum thing is a little silly. They have a stuffed tiger and yet no toilet.

It's actually funny just how closely 2 mirrors the first in its locations and progression. With a little bit of rewriting, it could be a remake rather than a sequel. There is one particular save room with the stairs outside and I often expect to go outside at that point but that's in the first. And I go upstairs and expect a corridor with two zombies. But no, that's the first too.

I do remember laughing back in the day when Code Veronica also had a mansion part. Doesn't Zero too? But it's a different mansion. It amuses me. It's like they have a notebook for all their RE game ideas. Most pages are empty except for the words 'mansion' and

                      'secret lab'.

Not really a spoiler for anyone who has played any RE game ever.

There's a toilet later on in the train yard!

Oh really? You'd think I would have noticed - on my Leon play through, he needed to go around half an hour in and held it in until the end of the game.

In the first three games there's what must be hundreds of files detailing umbrellas activities and peoples suspicions. They created such a interesting world within all those files, memos, etc then in resi 4...

well, there's a note titled 'OUR PLAN'.

What a smack in the face to the people who wrote all those amazing back stories in the first three.

Completely agree, and it's one of the things that makes me not treat Resi 4 as canon, or even a Resi game in fact. For instance, the memos about the watchdogs in Resi 3 are brilliant, nicely building them up and telling you how much of a threat they were, even though you only ever met two of them (3 if you include the corpse in the park). And it really worked well in building up how much of a threat Nicholai was even with barely seeing him.

The story in 4 went too far in the ridiculous camp for it to feel like it belonged. Young unsuspecting heroes versus the wrongdoings of an evil biochemical corporation whose misdeeds went unchecked. It's the oldest anime trope in the book, but the world building was second to none in the files and the surroundings- the effort that went into the prerendered backgrounds, and all the world and character building details that you can pick up on are immense.

Really adore Resi, and hope the remake is in the style of REmake and not over the shoulder.

Still think the Alien/aliens comparison holds true. 2 has more, bigger guns, more set pieces, more and bigger enemies, more spectacle, more bosses, a larger cast, a bigger story to tell... It all holds true for me.

I highly recommend the novelisations of the Resi games by SD Perry. They're a little old now, and more late teen reading but they really do help flesh the world out. Obviously as they went on there would be contradictions as the games canon altered- but they're a great read for fans.

That would mean Resi 4 was a steaming, festering pile of Jar Jar turds.
