I never quite follow this. I want more departure from the originals in the games I like.

You'd love it. Resi 4 stole most of its ideas from it. CONTROVERSY.

It was essentially a prerendered background Resi 4 though.

Large set pieces, ridiculous story, money from enemies to buy bigger and better weapons from shops. You'd love it.

I love the first too-although yes it's very difficult- you run out of ammo much more easily than Resi.

I love it mate, and I don't love any old shizzle. Just buy it, nakamura. You could probably get it for a couple quid delivered somewhere. I think when I get back from work tonite, I might hit the scrumpy and have a good blast on it. Just hope it's PS3 compatible!

Action-Survival I like to think of it as.

I do love Resi 4, it's silly good. I just don't see it as Resi- but if you've love old school Resi and new school- it's a good amalgamation of the two!

Survival Horror Action Games. S.H.A.G.s. Games like Dead Space etc. Good S.H.A.G.s. Occasionally, you might get the odd bad S.H.A.G.

                Bit like life.

The over the shoulder action game that everything is today. It did it all first.

I agree. Although I'd argue Dead Space 1 is more of a survival horror than Resi 4. Certainly not the high octane sequels though.

Dead Space is excellent though it's a little flat in the middle.
Dead Space 2 is a true Resi 4 sequel and absolutely amazing.

But it was so much of a departure that there is nothing ingame that would make someone recognise it as a Resident Evil title.

Even RE: Gun Survivor, which tried to mix things up a bit, is instantly recognisable as a RE game.

There were other survival horror games in the PS1 era but what took me back to RE time and time again was the nuances, the background detail, the music, the feel in the atmosphere that something awful has happened and what caused it is still lurking around.

I liked Code Veronica, even the

ridiculous transvestite/incest thing... (that was never really explained...)

didn't spoil it for me, it was a solid game that was evolving the series. It was the reason i bought a Dreamcast.

I detested the Ganados, they were the most boring enemies they could have created. I wouldn't be suprised if the art team took a trip to rural spain, went to a town fair and just took random photos of the old people....

The environments, even in the GC version were just bland and totally uninspiring. The environments in previous RE games told a story.

The most annoying thing for me though was that the last 15-20% of the game was excellent. It served to remind me just how bland everything else was, a few years after this was released gamers moaned about the lack of colour in modern games, for me RE4 was 50 shades of beige.

Gun Survivor was more like Resi than Resi 4? Hmmm.

Admittedly, I can see what he means. Gun Survivor had the sound effects, the magic boxes, the "door animation" whenever you moved from room-to-room...

When it comes down to it, Resident Evil 4 was a huge departure for the series. At the time, people either saw it as the shake-up the series needed, or the worst thing that's ever happened to it. These days, that's a more nuanced argument, as it's clear that 4 was the game which paved the way to 5 and 6; and I personally feel that 6 has killed the series stone-dead. I don't even particularly like the 3DS game, even though I've tried to get into it multiple times.

Six killed the series because it was a bad game clearly designed by committee.

Wether it defined a genre or not doesn't determine wether it's great or not. And you saying it's not overrated is opinion just as me saying it's overrated is opinion.

I could give reasons why it's overrated which you could dismiss as not mattering or not being bad things but good things.

At the same time Your reasons for it being great could be things i wouldn't like or wouldn't feel the same about and would see as bad things not good. If you felt it was great then fair enough but it's just an opinion as is mine that it's overrated. Neither persons is more or less valid than the others.
