Well jealous of people already playing this and I'm sitting here looking at a countdown timer...

The hype got to me, copy is in the post.

It looks amazing, interestingly DF are recommending the 30fps quality mode over the performance 60fps mode... didn't expect that but I still find 30fps jarring now.

My local CeX often gets a handful of new releases in at launch so I camped the website this morning clutching a £53 voucher. The PS5 copies went before I could checkout so I reserved a PS4 ver. It’s currently installing the second disc but I doubt the upgrade option will appear this side of midnight.

              Just, no.

Forbidden West free upgrade option was there this morning. I deleted the full PS4 install, now downloading the full PS5 game.

The 30fps RT mode worked better than the 60fps mode for Guardians so it might be there are too many noticeable compromises in Horizon to be worth the trade off. Think of it as an excuse to re-acclimatise before 60fps start disappearing again

30fps was a blurry mess in Guardians, it will be the same in this. 30fps needs to be taken out back and shot, then burnt, never, ever to come back.

Once we transition away from cross gen games I bet performance modes start disappearing, like NI says.

There might be a Pro machine down the line which offers them once we get to that point though.

2024 - I give it till then at most till it's the broad standard again. Otherwise it'd be an entire hardware generation held at PS4 visual benchmarks to maintain 60fps.... later and we'll probably start seeing dips below 30fps

Sounds about right. That will be ~3 years in, i.e. halfway through the gen. Not sure if they will do 'pro' machines this time out but if they did that would be about the time I'd expect to see them, and will be the only way to keep on with 60fps throughout the gen.

I skipped the pro-tier machines last gen but won't make that mistake again (provided we get them this time). I dismissed them early on as offering too slight a benefit, but by the end of the gen you were on a real second class citizen experience with the base models.

When I owned a Pro I did end up enjoying the performance boost but given how long this chip shortage situation is dragging on for, the high RRP without regular drops of consoles these days and how weak the sales of Pro and One X were if I were the companies I'd skip it and let PlayStation 6 and Series X2 enjoy a bigger performance impact.

I thought I was doing okay with Storm Eunice today as well. A bit of drizzle so far and very mild wind...

... and tracking update says Horizon II will be delivered on Monday now

No post today, so no Horizon from Base.

Just been into Smyth's who are doing the PS4 version for £54.99. Got home, put data disc in PS5, straight away the option for the upgrade appears so that's now downloading while the console is in rest mode and I can do some work.

When the Base copy arrives, I'll return it to Smyth's.

Do we know how the PS4 Pro and One X sold? I'd be very curious to see figures on that. I did a bit of googling and I can see in 2017 Sony said 20% of PS4s sold in the past year were Pros, but that was the first year it was on sale so I'd expect demand to be at its highest.

I guess it will depend on if they feel they can carve out a decent enough margin on it. If they can, it's an opportunity to sell a PS5 for a second time to perhaps (if we go by the figure above) 20% of the same audience (who otherwise would simply hang onto their existing machines).
