I'm surprised to see the PS Portal being scalped. I'm supposing it's Christmas craziness, because I can't see how this thing is worth £200, let alone a scalper premium on top. It's literally just a bog standard el cheapo Android tablet (which can't be used for anything a normal tablet can be) bolted onto a Dualsense.

It would have been kind of interesting if it worked on the same basis as the WiiU game pad. Although the game pad's range was poor, its peer to peer connection did give very good performance without the kind of lag I've always experienced when trying PS Remote Play on my phone or laptop.

But of course without a specially dedicated WiFi radio built into the PS5 like the one the WiiU had, that's not possible.

I don't really know why anyone would buy this over a Steam Deck which can do exactly the same thing but also play a ton of local games with incredible performance.

Yeah I mean it is cheaper than the LCD version of the Steam Deck but not by a huge margin and the Steam Deck offers so much more functionality it's in a different class.

I've used Chiaki on mine for PS5 remote play and it was very playable. For me the only reason you'd get this is you really only want remote play and live the dual sense haptics. Even then spending £80 more would get you into Steam Deck 64gb territory with the ability to increase storage when needed.

That's a pretty strong argument against getting a portal, it seems pretty much that Sony have gone in and made a dedicated streaming device but then not done any work to the software to accommodate for it being a set platform which is idiotic. I can see these being very cheap to pick up on the second hand market in a six months time when the hype dies down, that is unless Sony make the software better on this.

I think that's the reason I'm wary of the selling out stories. There's no sense of 'buzz' about the Portal so as much as PS is popular I'm inclined to suspect its selling out is a manufactured scenario through low stocks. Like throttling PSVR2 availability at launch

Given how many complaints the DS gets, has anywhere confirmed the real world battery life on this?

Think ETA Prime said they got about 5-6 hours. I'm more concerned about stick drift with this.

Steam Deck is pretty easy to repair and has hall effect stick options you can buy if you want to.

I presume this isn't as easy to open up.

Basic version of Steam deck is infinitely better option. If the Portal played PS5 games separately while the console could be used for Netflix etc, then i would say there's definitely a market for that when the kids are hogging the tv screen, but its just a mirror, so hard pass for me.

I've seen one tear down so far, analogs are easy to get to nothing else is, the guy below broke his first unit but learnt quite a bit from his tear-down, and i can see why hes recommending against it. it has an ancient snapdragon processor in it too so its not hiding any real power for hacking.

you say the steam deck is easy to repair but you to need to pry open the device remove delicate ribbon cables and then use pry tools and a heatgun to get the battery out, like the Quest or the Switch its not built to be easily user serviced no modern device is.

I miss the days of the psp or gba where they actually thought about battery replacement and made it so you could do that without half dissembling your device and voiding your warranty.

I meant that generally it's an easier prospect. Especially given Valve works with ifixit to basically offer spare parts. I had zero issue swapping the SSD with mine but I didn't realise you needed to heat gun to get the battery out.

Sony is being sued for $7.9bn. The case argues that Sony has abused its dominant position in the console industry to inflate its prices primarily through the PSN Store. Something they opened themselves up to more when Sony pulled third party purchasing options for the store thereby being anti-consumer. Sony argued that the case was flawed from the start and should be thrown out but a Judge has ruled that the case can proceed.

This will affect, and will be affected, by the Epic VS Apple lawsuit.

What a load of crap, PSN NEVER had 3rd party purchasing options whatsoever, and doing so would open the gates wide open to mass fraud, as Epics lawsuit effectively states that anyone should be able to copy a store built by someone else and sell at whatever prices they see fit.

Im shocked the lawsuit hasn't been thrown out already and hope Apple stomps epic into the dirt with this and then some.

Apparently Sony are going to track PS Portal sales as though the peripheral was its own console

                            Digest:

Sony made some new hardware that nobody cares about and will be £100 in a wire basket in Game shortly after Xmas.
Another multinational conglomerate doesn't like that Sony is winning.
                            No new games.
