How was the Microsoft's recent showcase which had 4 games two of them looking completely ****e, Microsoft bringing the content or acting any different to last gen? What did last year bring for Xbox? The broken mess that was Redfall? Starfield, the not as good as Skyrim space fast travel sim? or maybe the quickly forgotten boring driving sim Forza 18?

What's this amazing content that's coming on xbox this year, a new controller? An Indy FPS? The terrible looking Avowed? or the too short for its Budget Indy game Satsuma 2?

That's since the launch of the new consoles till now ignoring the padding with remasters/remakes that have been spooled out. It also includes what's known to be coming with the large hobbling on the Xbox side of ignoring every known title that is lined up that may yet release in 2024 or is known to be coming beyond that where a confirmation isn't in place yet of timing. Whether any individual likes the titles being released is immaterial, that's a subjective element. It's fair enough to not like what MS is putting out but a string of effectively free games of no interest isn't that easily countered by an absence of £70 games on its rival system. Considering how much vitriol MS has faced (rightfully for most of it) for failing to justify consumers investing £300 on their system last gen, it amazes me how so many are happy to hand free passes out to Sony this gen having handed them £500-£1000 plus. Hell, if I'm right in thinking, only three of those games above didn't come about via third party external deals or ironically acquisitions.

Given the last few years speculation it wouldn't surprise me if Sony has caused delays in their first party studios by ****ing away years of dev time pointless pushing them to chase the GAAS model.

            No Final Fantasy games?

Potentially, depending on if Square keeps them off Xbox. Not that they mean Sony lifting much of a finger

If it wasn't for PSVR2 I'd consider my PS5 to be a waste of money. The only PS5 game I've bought is R-Type Final 3 and that's because I picked it up cheap while in Japan. It's basically an enhanced PS4 Pro for me. And this latest State of Play isn't doing anything to change my mind about that.

I included the early gen games because those games were day and date new games, same reason why I left Miles Morales, God of War: Ragnarok and Horizon 2 on the list even though they're ported PS4 games. Astro could be included. Switchback and Synapse I definitely missed, but it will be because of the below focus the lists have:

The MS list is also focused on what Xbox Studios & Bethesda have published within this generation. Same with Sony where they've either published or directly financed the games listed. I also capped out the list till the end of 2024's known line up, games far down the line like Wolverine aren't on it as a result but equally neither are games like Fable 4, Gears 6 or Perfect Dark etc.

When looking at the fuller list there's an influx of relying on timed exclusivity. Kena's devs teased last year an Xbox port wasn't ruled out, Marathon is still Xbox bound, Silent Hill 2 is timed so likely to make the jump later and Burning Shores is just DLC. There's nothing wrong with Sony bagging some timed exclusives, it never bothered me when Xbox did it back in the day with Rise of the Tomb Raider despite the online furore it caused at the time, but they are like using a sticking plaster - they temporarily plug gaps or help maintain momentum between first party key titles.

The remasters I set aside because they're not a great inclusion in either approach. If taking the line that cross gen new releases shouldn't be included then the remasters become really depressing inclusions, especially given most are remasters of games already playable via PS5. If taking the opposite view then technically it bolsters Sony's own contribution but again in the most depressing way.

There's definitely a problem emerging with Sony's pipeline and sadly if they're this bogged down on putting out their own PS5 games it paints a really worrying picture for PSVR2.

I know it has been disliked by many but honest to god I think MS bagging Activision will end up being a good thing for PS5/6 owners. The looming expiration of Sony's marketing deal on Call of Duty will send jitters through them let alone the more distant agreement expiration which will hopefully have shaken them up to get their key titles moving.

If a reveal isn't made by the June Showcase's credits 2024 might actually be the first year Sony doesn't have a major tentpole launching - and this is heart of the storm time for this gen. When Wolverine rolls out late next year we'll be approaching Year 6 for this gen and speculating for PS6.

I can 100% see how someone would be happy with PS5, just not for what Sony is bringing to the table themselves... or isn't bringing... or is isn't bringing... isn't is...

This - things are getting perilously close to the point where buying a reasonably powered new PC each gen would still be more economical and you could count on one hand the games you wouldn't ultimately have access to

Just depends what you're into. If you like shmups, you probs gonna be disappointed. Get a Switch innit. Personally, got a PS5 initially for Demon's Souls - I love the game. Returnal and then Gran Tursimo 7. Then I got into FFVII Integrade and the Spider-Man games. Tiding me over have been a number of fighting games (again, what I'm into) Guilty Gear Strive, Melty Blood and now SF6 and Tekken. There's also been a surprise slither of Densha De GO! (Who'd have thought?!).

Now we are about to head into HellDivers 2, Rebirth, Dragon's Dogma 2, Rise of the Ronin, Test Drive Solar Crown, Expeditions.... and loads more. There's gonna be a one helluva back log!

My Steam Deck has helped my dip my toe into those PC games that are flavour of the month i.e. Vampire Survivors and Lethal Company.

My Series S, is the Game Pass machine (sadly cancelled due to not much going on...)

My PS5 is firing on all cylinders.

Neon I think you lost your argument, when you start holding up failed games like State of Decay 2 (a bad sequel to a very broken Xbox Live arcade indie game) and Gears Tactics (a spin off from the declining gears series) as bastions of xbox's "New Games" The whole reason Xbox failed last gen was its big exclusives were of very poor quality. Releasing games that are in the state Redfall was in, show their QC even in 2023 is pretty poor.

Gears Tactics is a great game to be fair. High quality and good fun... Whether it's your bag it's another discussion.

State of Decay 2 was a mess but has been supported with massive updates over time.

Redfall should never have left the building but I think MS learned a hard lesson to step in more there as they left that mostly to Bethesda to sort out.

Thing is I would argue QC out of the Xbox stables has been pretty high apart from those blemishes.

Forza, Flight Simulator, Starfield, Hifi Rush, Grounded etc... most Xbox titles have launched in a decent state.

I stopped playing Starfield (was enjoying it) due to a bug I was hitting at 50% repro rate where if I aimed down site, I would be zoomed in to 180 degree (behind me). Not sure if it was ever fixed, tied to my save... I threw it out there to Bethesda at the time. I never went back.
