Destiny 2 launched in 2017 what other game from 2017 is still relevant? and up until recently it was still bringing in enough revenue to support a massive studio of 1400 people.
To be fair to Bungie the game that came out in 2017 is unrecognisable from where it is today, you cant even play the orginal d2 campign missions anymore, because its a game that gets new content regualty added to it they have been working on one new big DLC for Destiny each year as well as seasonal story content that drops throughout the year.
The big DLC's include an entire new planet to explore, a new set of story missions new enemy's, new Armour, new weapons, new strikes, Dungeons as well as massive new 6 man raids, They have been remastering older raids from D1 also as part of their free seasonal content, theirs also loads of free events through the year, its why they haven't done a destiny 3. they have been in constant production on Destiny content and transitioned destiny 2 to a platform quite a while back. Think of it like the yearly Call of duty updates but without them relaunching the base game each time.
Its not been a perfect system though as if your not fully invested in the game you end up with this house of cards scenario where new players jump in buy the latest dlc, and get caught up in the "you dont own this dlc" trap when trying to progress other planets. I always thought that when a new dlc comes out they should move the older dlc onto free to play style system. Ive always seen buying the new DLC every year as like paying a yearly fee to keep playing the game like its a subscription service.
With regards to the removal of older content i can see why they do it the install size for destiny is massive as it contains years and years of content all built on top of each other (that nobody is playing anymore), no other game works like this in the marketplace bar Genshin impact which also has an install size problem and has moved to events that rotate in and out, its Archipelago summer event only stays in the game a few months a year and if you don't play it over that time period you miss out on the content and the rewards you can get form it.
It's not that they have been lazy its more they have been in constant production on Destiny
