You have to be an absolute prize c*** to break into games studios information like this, not just this but any online security breaches on a games studio. Their not hiding the massacre of a population here, their just trying to make games and go about their day.

Damn that is horrific for Insomniac/Sony and I really feel for the developers.

Not surprised by those PC port numbers given the timing / pricing on the releases, and the fact a few have released in less than stellar condition.

There's also internal documents on twitter supposedly outlining Sonys concern of the Activision deal and how Xbox will leapfrog them in the next few years.

can't tell if those slides are legit or not? Partly because I always feel corporate slides appear to be written by 5 year olds with attention deficit disorder...

Another leaked slide. Sony knows it's a premium competitor and also knows that it's current creaming the top off strategy can't last forever as the points highlight concerns that MS is playing the long game and is quickly creating a pathway that will cut Sony short down the line

This chart is only part of the picture it was a console exclusive during a pandemic with a chip and console shortage so it would of had limited sales potential during its launch window so who knows if it's seen as a failure for Sony or sold as expected, All we have is a graph showing roi with no context or time frame.

It was also given away for free as part of Playstation Plus so earning revenue for that service too at a later date.

I'd imagine the franchise has leeway as well given the belated PC port and it's one of the few franchises remaining that is firmly 'family' targetted. It woudl explain why another is still on the way but hasn't been prioritised for this gen

This is one of two slides doing the rounds that I mentioned earlier. I can't tell if they're actually legit or just fanboy manufactured stuff added on to make a point.

That said the fact the PC ports numbers are low points to possible failures against expected sales. It makes me wonder what Sony actually expects to sell releasing on PC 1-2y later...?

You'd expect something like GOW to sell well on PC but not every title is going to do that and especially when we see stuff like TLoU being pretty shoddy at launch.

Sony doesn't put the effort in. From handheld, to VR, to PC etc unless it's the core console they don't make the effort to engage and nurture the different market sectors that they could expand into. The Deck suggests a path forward whereby Sony could make their games scaleable when digital and have a genuine handheld option for the PlayStation brand whilst keeping everyone within a single ecosystem. Instead we get an overpriced wi-fi dependent tablet. The weak approach they took with the Vita has become a recurring behaviour which has led them to be phenomenally dependent on one device. The SNES, Wii, Mega Drive, PS2, 360 etc all show the peaks that led to very sudden changes of fortune so it's a bad position to be in to narrow themselves the way they have as the current success can vanish almost overnight and unlike their rivals Sony doesn't have much maneuvering room, what is Sony's gaming division without the strength of the PlayStation name behind it?

I can believe the slide is real because if it's not it would suggest Sony is still blindly marching on. If I'm being honest, if the PlayStation brand wobbles I'm not sure Sony has what it takes to weather it. If the market shifts away from the traditional home console under the TV model I don't think Sony is in a position to face that type of market and that would explain why the Activision deal panicked them. They're used to being the giant in the room but that deal gave them a glimpse of industry moves that go far beyond their capability to compete on that scale. They've likely benefitted from how entrenched and limited in growth the traditional console market has been for the past two decades meaning bigger players haven't cared to get involved.

I'm not so pessimistic. They have a 100m odd user base for the last 2 gens, it is very hard to see all of that going to either a) xbox, b) pc or c) streaming overnight. If these trends happen it will happen over years and they can pivot accordingly.

They've definitely made mistakes, but shown they are willing to take risks so there will always be failures. The portal might just be a low cost experiment for something like the steamdeck later on. I'm definitely interested in trying one out when they hit Aussie shores next year.

For Sony the first years of the PS3 was and should have remained a permanent wake up call. Two huge hit consoles and they blindly walked into killing the brands momentum so hard that it took the entire generation of aggressive work and rebranding to claw momentum back and even then it remains the only generation where they couldn't crack 100m, and their audience was very quick to jump ship too early on. If that had happened this generation I don't think they'd have as much success turning the ship around either as by comparison the PS5 is a much more lacking system in terms of usp. It's good that they are able to consistently put out high budget single player titles, they're still the go to on that front though I wonder how long that will remain sustainable given budgets.

When 7m+ selling games are considered flops the margins are going to get harder for Sony to maintain which woudl explain their current focus on GAAS titles but I can't imagine they'll succeed on that front given their history in that area and how few successful games in that arena made it intentionally.

Am I reading this right? Spiderman 2 cost over $300m to make. How is a game built on the same engine with mostly the same assets costing that much to make?

No way is that sustainable and apart from Venom all of the future titles listed from Marvel wouldn't have that luxury (same engine but not same animations/assets etc..)

That is an insane budget for standard length single player only title.
