Anybody else unhappy with the 3d Sonic games?

A friend bought Sonic Heroes yesterday and I gave it a decent test.
It's very similar to Sonic Adventure 2. Same kind of levels with grinding and so on.
The 3 character approach doesn't work very well. It only adds confusion and even though I played the game for 4 hours straight it didn't feel natural and I never got the hang of it. Whouldn't it have been better if Knuckles and Tails each had belonged to a fixed button of their own all the time so you knew exactly which button to press when you quickly needed their abilities, (since you always have very little time to react in Sonic games?)
The "puzzles" are very dull aswell. You run as Sonic, almost as on rails, trough roller coaster type levels (with the usual change of camera perspective in loops and so on) with no or very little control, and all of a sudden you run straight into a stone block. Change into Knuckles, smash the block and then run again as Sonic. (Sometimes you have to fly over the block or obstacle as Tails or find a little switch somewhere but that's about it. )
You don't really get the feeling that youre playing the game as Sonic, more watching an insane rollercoaster movie. And when you do get to do something, it is either smashing blocks or robot baddies as Knuckles or flying over an obstacle with Tails, which of course isn't especially fun.
Cameras are near awful like always. You constantly fall to your death seemingly out of nowhere and without the slightest warning or chance to elude the pit or the dangerous obstacle.... And this is me playing it who is used to the Sonic Adventure games who had similar problems.
My friend who never played a Sonic game before had no idea of what was going on while he was playing. He was like "...okay?" Everytime Sonic ran into a new high speed tunnel or was bounced around by those springboards which is basically what you do the entire game if youre not smashing blocks as Knuckles or flying to a higher point as tails.
The levels are far to long. Even though the graphics are gorgeous with insane cork-screws trough bizarre environments, it gets boring very quickly since the areas go on for a little longer than they should. Lots of ill placed triggers also which makes it bothersome sometimes to grab a switch or pull a lever. Sloppy Sonic Team!
The graphics are really nice though... I mean really nice. Reviewers giving the graphics 6 or 7 just don't know what they?re talking about or simply has bad taste. Casinopolis, beaches, futuristic city areas, the usual Sonic stuff are all rendered brilliantly. To bad the gameplay doesn't do the colourful levels justice at all.
I was really looking forward to this title but now I don't think I?ll be buying it. To bad.... It's just Sonic Adventure 2 with longer levels, an awkward and stilted 3 character set-up actually making the simplistic concept worse and even lousier cameras than last time.
It's sad seeing so much talent being wasted... Sonic Team (and Sonic in 3D) has such potential. But they oughta rethink their gameplay designs philosophies a little.

SA-Flawed but highly enjoyable
SA2-Again flawed but a better game than the first. Gotta soft spot for this
SH-A garballed mess of a game, awful graphics and terrible design.
Shadow-Probably the only game to show it could get any worse than Heroes
Sonic TH-Though not a good game I don't think it was as bad as the two before it or as bad as it became popular to call it
S&TSR-Not sold on the purely Arabian setting and still flawed but a massive step in the right direction.
Given all the cross over work between Sega/Nintendo I'd love to see Nintendo be involved in a 3D Sonic project to see what they'd come up with and where Sega could go on with it. Like when Sega aced it with F Zero GX.
And whatever the next game is... for f***s sake! Set it on Mobius!

SA1 and 2 were good games in their own right, really enjoyed them, though still clearly had a lot of refinement needed. I think a lot of us assumed that would be their focus post-SA2, but it was not to be.
Sonic Team do not deserve such harsh critisism over Sonic Heroes I feel, it's a highly polished title that actually felt finished and with clear direction, and they were trying something new, which is commendable.
But it certainly is a damn boring game, with much less to do than SA2.
I actually admit to enjoying Shadow the Hedgehog. I won't claim it to be a very good Sonic game, but I was certainly hooked when I played it, and played it to completion on all routes. But I think I took the game on it's own merits, as opposed to the next Sonic game.
Sonic 360/PS3.... god, possibly the worst game I have ever played, but even more depressing in that you can see the bits that are good in the game, the bits that had potential if the game had another year of development... but it's so clear the management at Sega wanted the game out that Xmas, and was unprepared to let the team finish their game.... suddenly you appriciate the publishers allowing titles like RE5 and GTA4 to be delayed for them to be completed.
I bought it on the PS3 too in hope some of the bugs might have been sorted, but it was not to be.
Sonic & the Secret Rings? I really enjoyed the game myself, though it was far too hard later on. Not 'hard' as in 'broken' like Sonic 360/PS3, it was just frustratingly hard. Something to focus on with the next game.
None of them capture the magic of the old games, but I think any 3D Sonic game will have to be appriciated on it's own merits, and perhaps we've not had one yet that truely deserves that.

Certainly that's the kind of problem that destroyed Sonic 360/PS3 though.

In Japan I'm pretty sure they've always known him to be on earth and among humans. Personally, I'd rather it was set on Mobius too, as that's the concept I grew up with. But to do that they would surely alienate the Japanese ideal, would they not.
Of course I could be wrong about everything.

IMO, the Sonic games bombed after the first title on the MD. The 3D games were both pathetic in terms of gameplay and control mechanics, plus the camera sucked. I downloaded a demo of the 360 version recently on a friends system to see if anything had changed, but it was the same old ****.
The only developer that can do the franchise justice right now is Bioware with there RPG Sonic title.
