I'm guessing that's the Silent Cartographer, my favourite Halo level too, possibly alongside Assault on the Control Room (you got to drive all of the useable vehicles in one level, it was superb).

Assault on Control Room - Halo
Crying Dog - Made in Wario
Opening level - System Shock 2
              Opening level - Thief
              -
A level with lots of jumping and lots of water - Metroid Prime (not to spoil things
              -

Not a level as such, but when you discover the downed 'plane in D2. Incredibly atmospheric.
Indeed, that was incredibly spooky. And I seem to remember you introducing me to this game...

I can't remember any more, mind has gone blank

Oh yeah, the first snow level on Goldeneye on the N64.

Why? I just love the music on that stage...

Attack on the Control Room is amazing such a quality level, playing that on legendary co-op takes ages to complete it

Halo as well is a quality level as is Silent Cartographer.

Le Mans and Mugello on Moto GP XB :P

                  Will think of others

You could make it with the feather too in the SNES version, but they took it out in the GBA update so the mushroom was the only option. ft:

                        Sakura's stage on Zero 2 -
The music and colours used set a wicked atmosphere.

Stardust Speedway on Sonic CD -
This level to me is concentrated Sonic vibe, does more for me than Starlight Zone etc - again the music is the killer!

                        Zoness on Starfox64 (JPN version)
The music coupled with the bleak look of the level and wicked voice acting as the whole team ethnic cleanse the stage is just heaven.

Cosmo Canyon - Final Fantasy 7
If it had an arcade I'd live there.

                        Uru - Panzer Dragoon Saga

Here's a couple fresh in the memory.

                          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                          Panzer Dragoon Zwei:

Episode two: Taking off with Lagi for the first time and flying out of the canyons and engaging in a huge air battle over a desolate desert.

Episode five: Imposing clouded orange sky burning out on the embers of a dying sunset, snow streaming down from all around, and a warped twisted wasteland buried deep underneath...

                          Beautifully atmospheric level.

                          Panzer Dragoon Orta:

Episode two: Flying along a dream-like stream next to a wonderfully sculpted rocky embankment, then through an amazingly overgrown forest. Not to mention being thrown out behind a waterfall and witnessing the surroundings as they reflect and distort against the liquid pouring down.

Episode seven: The trippy experience of moving through Sestren, and then witnessing an awe-inspiring watercolour clouded sky just before the boss. Gob. Smacking.

I still love swimming around on the first water level on SM64 - the one with the sunken ship. Coaxing that eel out and swimming about in that misty water is just excellent.

Level zero in the original ToeJam and Earl on the MD was excellent too. It was the level with the Hula Hula girls!

i have to agree with you guys on the silent cartographer it is a fine level, however my favourite level ever has to be in sin and punishment the one at sea with all the aeroplanes and warships

                                Others...

PDS: Forbidden Zone, Zoah's Forest (atmosphere on steroids)

FFVII: Midgar (I love the pace at the start, and the whole cyberpunk feel of the city)

Silent Hill: The School (a horrifically terrifying place)

Metal Gear Solid: The End Base (love how the tension just builds and builds and builds towards the climax)

Shenmue II: Green Market Qr/South Carmin Qr -Both At Night- (love the music, and the over-exaggerated lighting. Makes the various times at these particular locations feel really different)

Rez: Level Four (Flying through Old China, I think, in wireframe. Built up and up by that beat, climaxing via a funky guitar solo pumping out along with the running man boss. Sublime)

Soul Calibur: Cervante's level (ship, water, red rotten sky with the sunset. It just all comes together. Music, visuals, action... Most atmospheric level I've ever played in a beat'em'up)
