Fave level has to go to Ikaruga's first level, I can play this level again and again, the part where the ships engines heat up and the music really starts to kick in is pure magic.

    Other faves:

couldnt say one single as my favourite, but these spring to mind.

Castles in super mario world, and the sepcial levels after the star road too.

cueing for the toilet song in parapper always amuses me...."this is life"

first level of sonic adventure, with the killer whale chasing you across the bridge.

the long track of the first ridge racer is very cool, so many nice bits on one course, tunnels, waterfall, helicopter, jumps if your fast enough

the music room in luigi's mansion, spent along time playing with the instruments.

God, yes. I always used this as a demo to get people wanting to buy a DC. I also used Kilik's demo in Soul Calibur. That got 'em snagged, and no mistake.

                  Goldeneye: Facility

The level design in this game is some of the best I?ve ever had the pleasure of playing. The Facility level is possibly the best combination of atmosphere, stealth, and all-out action. Due to the fact is plays home to the hardest cheat to unlock, and is mighty fine in multiplayer, I have grown to adore this level.

Metal Gear Solid 2: The Tanker

Another example of mighty fine level design. It was original, deeply atmospheric, and a lot of fun to explore. I?m sure the fact you play as Solid Snake during it influenced me somewhat in its favour.

Grand Theft Auto III: Liberty City

A more interesting, enjoyable playground than Vice City and a place I?ve yet to grow bored of despite roaming its streets for many, many hours. The weather effects help and the dark and gritty atmosphere makes it feel more like a real place to my British eyes.

Banjo Kazooie: The Sandy Beach Level

Another highly atmospheric level. Dated now, but the sense of scale was immense. Climbing the massive mountain in the centre of the level was very enticing and the breathtaking view more than compensated for the legwork.

Zelda: Ocarina of Time: The whole game.

It?s like a textbook on what every good level should be.

Ryu's stage on the boat in SFII Turbo.

Pac-Man and Space Invaders - Minimalist classics.

"Punch Kick it's all in the mind"

Goldeneye+Perfect Dark none stands out for me as definitive, but so many levels of groundbreaking design it's incredible.

Rally section in GT3, forgot which one. Shame it's not longer.

Any 3D shooter that involves destroying an entire armada, so Sin and Punishment, Starfox1, and ZOE2 then.

Well, plenty of people have mentioned The Silent Cartographer, so I'll bypass that and also mention The Maw. I know the driving at the end was a bitch, but there was such a sense of desperation to it that it also thrilled me greatly. Nothing like driving like a mad man, holding onto your life by the skin of your teeth.

Dinasaur Park in JSRF is also a favorite. So extremely trippy.

Womblingfree - Space invaders? Err, why?

Outrun - Stage 2 (Rock tunnels)

Parrallax - Stage 4 - The electric sea (cool at the time, its a rather old game)

                          R-Type - Stage 3 - Mothership

I am glad someone else thinks this too. My thoughts are the exact same as above.

The Windmill stage in Soul Calibur 2 My jaw dropped when I first saw this, and continues to impress today.
I'm with C' on this one too. I cannot believe how much depth there is to this stage. You can even see the cloud vapour passing by! The mindmills move in the background....and to top it off the music is lovely. Fantastic stuff.

Metroid Prime is full of my favourite areas so cannot pick just one. Every single area is crafted to perfection. love every moment of it, love every section.

Zelda WW - "Black and White section" - This really brought an immense smile on my face. So lovely to look at, so fun to play.

There are of course loads more taken from such games as Super Mario World, Donkey Kong, Plok, among many others but the above are the ones which are of the top of my head.

You sir, are the man. I was beginning to think I was the only person who appreciated this stage for its true glory. All my mates are like 'meh' when they see it. Such insolence can only be treated with a thorough beatdown from Talim.

Oh, I'd forgotten about that one. The end of that level was truely phenomonal. The thrill of that section (and THAT jump) is unsurpassed and I'm glad Bungie went for this rather than, 'look, here's a big bad alien beastie that you have to kill to complete our game'.
