Right, first off I'd like to give a disclaimer and say I do not care where, when, by whom or whatever the games are developed by or for. I have my opinions of the machines and companies, but Mario Sunshine on a Gamecube, would be the same as Mario Sunshine on a PS2 so it matters not to me. So don't take my DS opinion as Nintendo hate; I know it isn't, but I don't want this to turn into a flame war.
I've been noticing chinks in Sony's armour for a long, long time now, but they always act on them and amend them eventually. Their brand name helps them significantly I think (poor PSX sales asides, but I'll get onto that), as in the early days of Dreamcast when I was riding home on the bus from college I'd hear people behind me call the DC ****, and that they were going to play Soul Blade or some such (this actually happened). Whilst we were no doubt all in outrage about only 4MB of video RAM, no one else gave a crap and the machine still sold really well.
The PSX is a good point, but I do think on the other side of the coin that everyone in Japan that wants a PS2 has one - not to mention DVD recorders and HDD recorders have been out for ages already. I think, maybe, if the PS3 comes out in two versions; regular console, and super HDD/DVD burner machine version, sales of the multimedia box would be significantly better than the PSX has been.
As much as Iwata in power is much better for the company, you can tell the scars still remain. Appreciating Yamauchi was still in power, Namco rued Nintendo's hold over them for 6 years after their failed Megadrive experiment; the moment an alternative platform came along they flipped the bird to Nintendo. That kind of **** doesn't go away overnight in any industry, let alone one as fickle as this.
Sure, Nintendo is slacking. They've outsourced two of their most prestigous franchises this generation, they failed to analyse what the market wanted with the Gamecube, they fail to offer many third parties (not ones close to them such as Capcom, mind) with the support and backing needed, and - as much as I admire the "keep it cheap because specs don't matter" angle - it just turns off Joe Semi-Smart (i.e. not Joe Average who buys a PS2 by default) and turns him to the Xbox. AND THEY STILL HAVEN'T SHED THE KIDDY IMAGE! They're not seeing this. I have a better impression of the DS now that I've downloaded the videos of Sonic DS and WarioWare, but I still can't see it appealling to many people past us...
Have you polled, or *if* you would poll? GTA, Gran Turismo, Ape Escape, Square's main stuff will all be heading to the PSP; all reasons for Sony to print money in advance really.
We'll see more when the PSP software is playable at TGS anyway.
