    speed = speed
    bandwidth = bandwidth

    50MB file uses same bandwidth whether downloaded in 1 second or 1 hour

    angry nanny state of inadvertant (full of excuses) Mussolini wannabe's = BT

    BT BT Down Down Down!

      I think you poorly define what you mean by speed.

      Perhaps by "unlocking more speed" you mean increase the capacity of the backbone (Colossus) so that all these new broadband customers downloading teaser trailers don't reduce the system to a grinding halt, similar to what happened when BT implemented surfport and surfport24 (that'll be surftime and anytime ISP packages)? In that instance, I agree. I can't see how the backbone can keep up with the rate of expansion, which is why the introduction of caps doesn't surprise me. Though presumably technology has moved on a bit since I was there.

      If by more speed you mean interconnectivity between ISPs, then blame the ISPs, not BT. You are (wrongly) assuming, I suspect, that when you've "sent" an email, it is sent. It's added to the outgoing queue. At one point, BTinternet's servers were taking a number of days to then propagate it. ISP fault; learn to whinge at the correct part of BT.

      I'd like to see the "specifications for ADSL", do you have a source document or url? You might be interested to know, as you have previously mentioned you're over 3km from your exchange, that you may well be on RADSL, not ADSL.

      Rewiring the UK would cost a fortune. Interestingly, rewiring the US cost a fortune, which is why blueboxing etc went on for so long. It is conveniently forgotten that half of Europe was levelled 60 years ago, necessitating a new telephony infrastructure. Perhaps the blitz should have included the whole of the UK, to keep the net whingers happy.

      This limit isn't to screw you over, it's a natural progression. Countries like Holland have already reached it. That they have better packages anyway is a matter of logistics, nothing more.

      One last point - the law says the cables only need carry voice, so you're whinging at BT? I think that says it all.

          <quote>I initially wanted to set up with Pipex, but their customer service was awful. After I ordered online, the status page didn't change at all for three weeks. I rang them a number of times, and they couldn't (or weren't arsed to) sort **** for **** out</quote>

          Placed an order with Pipex 10 days ago and the status of my order has been "on hold" since then.
          When I eventually got through to customer support, I was informed my activation was down for the 28th of July.Only then to be told BT had since inform Pipex there wasnt enough room on the exchange and I would have to wait for them to upgrade it.Sounded a lot of bollocks to me.If its not sorted out soon ill go back to Zen .?50 activation charge, but at least they seem to be more effecient with dealing with BT wholesale.

            Finally my local exhange is being upgraded! As of 1st September I'll be able to get broadband. Yay! I'll probably be going for the 1Mb line because the price difference between it and 512 isn't that great but at this moment I don't care about caps because it'll be so great not to be on dialup that I honestly won't care if I have to stop at 30gb a month. Plus I can't imagine after the first month or two that I'll be getting anywhere near to that amount (that opinion may change)

              I'm going to cancel BT now (after 2 years) and go ahead with the 1.5mb NTL line. 2 months free trial too.

                Glad I'm in a cable area (Telewest). 1.5mb line for ?35 a month, no download limit. The thing is on all day every day downloading on BitTorrent (anime).

                BT sounds like a disaster zone.

                  Yeah. Sucks to be in an area Cable companies cba to move to. Thank God Thatcher held up BT's rollout of highspeed infrastructure to allow cable companies to get their foot in the door.

                  ?_?

                    I've had the 1 meg upgrade for a couple of weeks now but the 30 gig limit is going to be a problem.

                    Last month I caned it with about 40 gigs usage (and half of that was on a 512 kps line)

                    In 6 days this month I have used 14 gigs already

                        Just reinstalled Netmeter after a format, and i'm wondering. Would 'usage limit' be classed as upload+download, or just download? If it's upload and download, i'm afraid I might have to find a new ISP, but 15gb a month just download is ok. I heard something about BT having 'burstable uploads' so it doesn't really matter how much is uploaded from you. Don't know if it's true or not.

                          It includes both upload and download.

                            Virgin are quite good, no restrictions unless you go for their 3gb month cheapy package, minimum contract is a month and then monthly, and installation is quick, friend got a wires only package set up in 2 days.

                              It's a guideline not a cap. If you contantly break it, they will 'discuss' it with you
