Why, thank you kind sir for the considered opinion.

I'd admit to having some serious FPS fatigue at the moment, though. UT2K4 has hardly been played because it just feels like more of the same run and gun nonsense with slightly better graphics.

Mr Mid - I understand your sentinments entirely. I played the first five or so levels of Far Cry, and about six of UT2K4 - just couldn't be bothered with them.

Call Of Duty was different though, that was special.

A new enemy appears and you're amazed - for a few minutes. Then things fall back into a rut for half an hour until the next moderate surprise.

Considering the smashing opening level and setup, the game is so far struggling to live up to its initial promise. I've just trounced the spider boss and things are looking up a bit, though I'm still negotiating near-identical corridors, offices and laboratories.

I can't understand the overwhelming fear that people are testifying to, either. The game is so similar and the level design so routine that I've felt no tension or suspense whatsoever. Were the extreme darkness and sporadic lighting used sparingly then the effect would be intense, but it's a trick that's been extended across the entire game (so far) and as such feels less and less effective.

Am I the only person who's feeling this way? I'm no Doom hater - it looks gorgeous and I've been looking forward to it for ages - but so far I'm equal parts impressed and disappointed. I doubt this game will live up to Far Cry, I even wonder if it will live up to Riddick; one thing's for sure, Half Life 2 will annihilate it.
Nice to see that there are pople that agree with me, Im having a real hard time getting impressed, sure i like the graphics, although , o got more irritated than, those repeated jumping jacks from the dark, i found it utterly irritating.....I dont know...its shallow as a game exp. As i said earlier, find Pd, shoot zombie...find PD..shoot imp.....shoot imp...oh...a spider...shoot spider...find......well i think you get the picture.

It does look amazing doesn't it. It freaks me out when I walk into a room with no lights on and I have to search through the room with just the torch light, then suddenly zombie in your face!

Are those screenies indicative of the screen size you are running it at under Ultra High? :/

I changed it for those pics.

                  Those were taken using :-

                  Ultra High
                  1024 x 768
                  4xAA

Still playable but a bit jittery in places - not too much mind.

Edit :- just noticed that the top pic is not on those settings. It was taken at:-

                  1200 x 960
                  High
                  No AA

                  Still looks pretty bloody good

You do know they're tumbnails ?

If you click them, they get bigger.

just a minor detail that bugs me, why arent there more implementation of detail mapping in games these days? How come they didnt do it in this game?
