I know exactly what bump mapping is, I've already given two definitions for it. If you're such an expert, I'll gladly listen to your explanation of it.

CoD scripted? Yeah, and Doom 3 ain't

im sure theres a numerous tweaks available for doom 3. can people post the ones they know of, i heard theres a way to alter the cache settings and stuff to speed it up even further.

btw where do you enable triple buffering, i can't find the .inf or .cfg file in the doom 3 folder that has it.

            Gamespots review

I would say that review was somewhat damming. If I didn?t know what Doom was that review would have put me off, Yet they still give it a 8.5?

Why cant people enjoy it for what it is, DOOM!

Read the Gamespot review this morning. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and reviews are of course, utterly pointless. All the same, I was surprised to read what the guy was ranting about, and the score at the end.

The review reads like a total assasination of the game, but then an 8.5? Eh? Did I miss something?

Still, I can't imagine ID cares. They will sell lots of copies regardless and the vast manjority of the public seem to love it. Which is all that matters, to hell with brain dead reviewers.

I haven't even got the game yet and I am getting dissapointed by all the reviews I have read. From what I have read, it is said to be an enjoyable game, but not a masterpiece as everyone was hoping for. Never mind, I am still getting it

Remember that Doom 3 was almost certainly never going to live up to what people expected it to be... look at it's legacy, and the legacy of Id Software generally, which is perhaps the source of some 'disappointed' commentary.

But from your comments, you sound like the kind of person who's going to reserve final judgement until you play it anyway...

I certainly wasn't expecting a "Master Piece", ever since Quake, id haven't exactly produced decent games, just decent engines, although arguably Q2 was quite nice.

I am gonna rock into it tonight after some tweakage and get freaked out by realtime shadow moving lights.

Thing is, I never really followed Doom 3, as I am not a PC gamer. However, since I am building a new PC my interest in the game has rocketed. However, all I am expecting from it to be honest is a good looking engine with good sound, dark atmosphere and shooting. Saying that, I have very high expectations for Half Life 2.

well so far i have tried

                        seta image_useCache "0"
                        seta image_cacheMegs "20"
                        seta image_cacheMinK "200",

And all do nothing, a lot of people are saying that messing with teh above setting improve proformance, so far i have had no joy..

As for the unpacking of the compressed maps\textures i can see this adding a little to performance as doom wont be uncompressing on the fly..

This tweak has absolutely cleared up all my problems. The games runs smooth as silk at 1024X768 on High Quality

Here are my system specs for others:

                          P4 2.1 Ghz
                          512 DDR RAM
                          GeForce4 4600/TI 128 meg
                          SoundBlaster Live! 5.1
80 Gig HD Partitioned to 60/20

                          What a load of bollock's.

I doubt that it would run "smooth as silk" on that machine with all the effects turned off.

Some people think 30fps is "smooth as silk".

If it stays locked at 30fps, it's smooth.

Some people think that anything less than 60fps is unplayable rolly ******* eyes

Fiddling with the settings you mentioned speeds up caching when going into new areas (the door-opening pause isn't as bad now), but I have to agree that all the tweaks and drivers people are going on about have done f-all to improve performance. Bunch of wind-up merchants they are.

Timedemo 1 @ 800x600 High Detail, V-Synch on gave me 34.0 fps on second pass. Which will do I suppose.

I've now seen rather more bump mapping now I remembered to appply the high detail setting
