interesting stuff on shotgun damage. It's more the the ferocity of the explosion, rather than the pellets themselves, from what I could ascertain (due to aerodynamics).
Completely different to the dynamics of pistols.

You'd probably find the zombies die if you hit them in the lead arsecheek with all the pellets from your shot.

Originally posted by RavonAre well just got around to finishing Doom 3, bloody good game, thats why im off to play through it all again.. lock and load people...
I am only at Alpha Labs 3, (About 4 hours in) and I am so very satisfied with the game. It runs fast on my old rig (1.8Ghz, 9800Pro, 30FPS on 1024 MED) and is without doubt the scariest game I have ever played.
I must confess after 2 hours I had to install the Duct Tape mod....
It's bad enough having all those nasties, my heart just couldn't take not having the shotgun with a light.
When I have finsihed it, I'll replay without the mod... I am using the mod where only the shotgun and pistol have lights... The light spread is about 50% of the flashlight, so I still use the light for scanning, but have a light for aiming.
Even though I should be used to the creatures jumping out, I must confess it still scares the hell out of me!
And what about the UI! Have you ever seen little PC screens at such High res? The scripting is all very Robocop/Alien/total recall but it is done with such high quality! I really do find myself drawn into the game, listening to every last audio clip, taking a glance at the funky machinery, watching the videos....
The graphics are outstanding. They are quite blocky in one way, but totally smooth and lifelike in another. It just feels so "Chunky" and "metallic" The use of lighting is the best I have ever seen. I feel so much like I am part of an interactive Horror Sci Fi!
Sound...
I choose to use headphones, so as not to wake the family! Again, in my opinion, the sound is the best I have ever heard on a FPS. It is genuinly scary stuff.
The game is Doom. If you want to play doom in terrifying audio/visual detail, then buy the game.

uh-oh... I think I've hit the doom 3 wall. I got the end of hell on Monday. Then I didn't play it tuesday. And Now I can't muster any enthusiasm to play it again. Just the feeling that I'm only half way through, its not gonna change at all, and that everyone seems to think it peeks during hell but then goes down hill.
This happens to me a lot though. I didn't complete Deus ex or Half Life until my second try so I might give it a few weeks before I try again.

I'm using a duct tape mod - it doesn't give a light to the pistol though - only the shotgun and the machine gun. The problem is I am now finding the game scarier (I didn't really find the game too scary before I just got annoyed by the fact that every time I got jumped while holding the flashlight I would immediately scroll to fists or grenades or something equally useless) and possibly harder because I rarely use the flashlight now and the light on the guns is so much smaller that I often miss things and suddenly find a spider at my feet - also scanning dark places with the tiny light is scarier too - I'm too lazy to whip out the flashlight.
Loving this game - in Alpha 3 too.

Played it today and I have to say I am impressed. Great atmosphere and spooks, but after a while you don't get scared when you have bad ass weapons :P
One thing though, my PC spec is:
Athlon 64 3000
512 MB DDR 400 Ram
Radeon 9800 Pro
120GB 7200 rpm SATA hard drive with 8MB buffer
when I get it to choose best settings it chooses medium and on a very low resolution (640 x something). Anyone with a similar spec like to comment? I have chosen to run it on high, but at 800x600 and with no AA or AF, only that way does it run smoothly.
