I'm not sure but I assume the battery is continusly charged and the iPod runs off its battery, not the mains.

LiIon's aren't trickle charged... every time you charge it that counts as one cycle.

I'm pretty sure that if you leave the iPod in the dock it runs off mains once it's completed it's charge cycle.

The problem is if you unplug it and plug it in again the ****ing thing will start a new charge cycle

Well, I'm GETTING mine on Thursday - It's sitting there in its box waiting for my birthday; that's WAY beyond cruel isn't it?! Then again, it's a gift so I can hardly complain, now can I?

Yeah. The only thing you could complain about is price really. But you can't, it's a gift. Longer battery life is handy. But 3g battery life is more than enough.

Just downloaded iTunes in preperation for when my Ipod gets here. Ripping all my CDs, i've got loads of tracks and it's not even half a gig. This is immense.

Welcome to the 1337 club of iPod owners...

Just a bit annoyed because the new one is even cheaper so the sell on price for my 40GB iPod is going to be even less. I paid ?250 for it but i probably wont make that back now seeing as the new "better" one is retailing for ?299 here and ?214 in US.

The only word i can use to sum it up is MEH!

But will you ever fill up 40 gigs with 'Quality' music? even if you do, will you ever listen to em all?

Well you are right but every cd I have ever bought is on my iPod along with friends and families collections too

Personally its about having all my music there for whenever I want it. At home I have all my CDs in racks where very few of them get much play. However on my iPod I dont have to physically change the CD over every time I want to play something different and it just allows me to have a bit more variety. Oh and variety is the spice of life 112

I'm not sure that i'll ever fill the iPod but I find that being able to use it as a portable hard disk is also incredibly useful.

What does anybody else think? Why are we compelled to buy large capacity music players?

Yes, you pretty much can. Mine has 25 gb used and is full of stuff I enjoy. Adding another 6gb tonight etc.

Yep, you can and will. The shuffle function is where it's at
I'll be using mine as a portable HD more now since I noticed the computer staff in university listened to my complaints and have upgraded the machines with firewire ports.

they must be suckers for punishment. you'll be filling their file shares up with mp3s and sucking all their p2p bandwidth now.

I actually try to download music as little as possible rather owning the album than having scrambled files but then maybe I'm just an idiot who cant get in to the whole downloading music mentality.

Just bought one of the new ones (20gb), and it's DOA. It connects to the PC okay, but always crashes when I try to copy anything to it. Managed to get a few songs on it eventually, unplugged it, played a song... and it crashed.

It's like MacOS 7 all over again!

Replacement iPod is already in the post from the Apple Store.
