Thats always been my worry too. Iv looked at getting some Shure headphones but then it would mean that I would potentially need another pair of non Shure headphones to go out and about with. I like to hear whats going on...

Try some overears, preferably open back ones so you can hear stuff going on around you. Saves having to take them out of your ears when people talk to you, which, with gloves on is a bastard. Although I wouldn't recommend wearing headphones when nailing powder/back country. If you go down, so do your headphones.

i am so glad that i waited for the 4G - was previously put off ipods due to the battery life being 6-8 hours, well i have had 14 hours out of one charge upto now and its still at one bar (i have heard that it will run for another 30 mins or so when its on zero bars) .... now i can't wait till my shure's arrive
ps 14 hours when playing it on shuffle songs (randomising 5000+ tracks) and max volume (using the Eupod volume optimizer) .... very impressive

Ok, so talk to me about the inherent Battery iPod problem.
I charge my iPod it says that it is full charge, and then when i turn it off overnight or summit, the battery is empty and the whole apple loading thing comes on the iPod screen.
So basically... it doesn't hold charge even if I charge it loads...

My 3G 20gb iPod went arse over tit today
Fully charged last night, connected it to my PC at work in order to copy some files over and the drive just started to spin up, click, apple logo (repeat), until it wore the battery out.
Managed to get it back to original settings but it wont format or Restore.
Bastard ****in' thing
Well, at least it's just under warranty, I suppose.

I just bought me a 20GB iPod today. I've been wanting one for ages, but never could bring myself to get one. But, lately I've been doing a lot of walking at work (I work in a Network Operations Center during the midnight shift), and doing laps around the building in silence is a pisser. So, I thought, why not get one of these, transfer over some audio books and dramas, and then listen to those whilst I'm getting a 30 minute walk in. Can't wait to fire it up and give 'er a whirl.

Hey, my auntys bringing me over a 20 gig 4th gen ipod next week when she comes over from america, only i read something thats got me worried, that it's got a special shaped plug that stops me from using a converter, and that i need to buy a special thing from apple that costs about ?30??? Surely thats not true! I've heard no mention of it before, it was in a customer review on amazon or something ... So, can someone explain to me how the Ipod charges? Sorry, I'm new to Ipods, it says on the 4g description thing, that it charges through fire wire, how does this work? Is there not just a normal charger? Also, do I need to use a step down, normally i'd just take it for granted that you use a step down, but I'm all confused on how you charge it, so anyone who knows how it all works, then i'd really appreicate it if you could just write it up for me, thanks alot!

Unless he meant that you need to buy a specific iPod dock for 4th gens. Though you can use a 3rd gen one (so i've read) you just fold some pieces of paper, or something so the pod wont be so wobbly when trying to prop it up.
The dock is not included for the 20GB. Only for 40GB.
You can charge the iPod in 3 ways:
1. USB 2.0 cable (supplied)
2. Firewire (supplied)
3. Apple mains plug adaptor (you also need to use the Firewire cable as well for it to work)
With the USB & Firewire charging - you just plug the correct ends to each other and away you go. As long as your PC has power, the pod will charge.
I'm afraid i have no idea whether you need a stepdown or not. Though i presume so, since it will come with a 2 pin mains adapter if you decide to charge it that way.Last edited by jimtendo; 24-08-2004, 20:39.

Thanks for that chief, that really helped me out alot. I decided to get a UK Ipod instead, just so I could get a warrenty in the UK, the saving from america wasn't that great. I managed to get a 20 gig 4th gen Ipod from the apple store for ?200 with student discount, the only downside is, that it says it's not ready to ship untill september 8th, but, at least it gives me time to upgrade my PC, it should be getting done this week, windows 98 be gone!
