finally decided to bite the bullet and pick one of these up - ?299 for a 40gb 4G was just too low to refuse

anyways - updating all my music from itunes to the ipod (23 gig or so) and the bastard has crashed 3 times upto now - not losing anything (i think) and it resumes from where it crashed but its still offputting....

now - should i do the volume thingy or do i not need to bother (using sony fontopia's and it seems loud-ish without being silly), and what EQ setting is the best - tried out the hip-hop setting and it sounds pretty good with decent bass levels

I havent done the volume thing because to me its more than loud enough. Im just using the standard headphones but will at some stage get some noise cancelling headphones. The EQ settings dont really do anything for me with little difference to be honest. I just listen to my music pure and its better for my 3G battery! The battery I am sure is tremendous on the 4G but the 3G one you have to do as little as poss if you want to get the most out of the battery.

Just finished a battery test of the my 4G iPod.

It clocked just a little over 12 hours 47 minutes - continuous playback.
However, about 11 hours before i started the test, i used the iPod (the night before) for about an hour before i switched it off, then i went to sleep. So it might've gone on for a little longer... maybe.
This is before i've downloaded the 6th August update with it's supposed 'improved power management' and just did the battery longevity test with it's factory settings.

The iPod had been on it's 3rd full charge (not quite sure how many full charges it needs to reach it's potential max hours playback quota) with the following variable i used to do the test:
        - EQ settings were not used.
        - the majority of my songs are 128kps with the odd 192kps track (if it makes a difference)
        - i left the volume at about 3 quarters the way up.
        - i didn't mess about skipping tracks constantly, or pressing a lot of buttons.

how can i stop it playing through a playlist? i know how to pause it etc but at the mo the only way i can stop it is by clicking the ff button till the playlist is dead .... there has got to be an easier way

          cheers

You have to manually choose another playlist/artist from the actual iPod rather than pressing FF on the remote.

i mean how do i actually stop the ipod playing altogether - sometimes i might be partway through a playlist and i will want to stop listening to music altogether (for a while at least) so i will want to stop the track playing/playlist ... is there a way to do this?

Right. Easiest thing to do is to get a single song and call it something unique like 1.end track as the artist. This will be placed at the top of the playlist/artist list and then you just select this song and press FF once.
As this is the only song in the selection the iPod will revert to the main menu where you can then press/hold play to turn off.

                Other than that no

another quick question (concerning itunes more than ipod) - i connect my ipod to the dock, will itunes automatically update any new tracks i might have in itunes?

                  Comment

                    and.........

i am guessing that every track needs to be named correctly - ie trackname/album/artist ..... is there an app or something which will do this quickly or do i need to do it all manually?

                    Comment

Every time the Ipod is plugged in iTunes should update all your music with any new songs you got and update your music titles.

When you put a music CD in it should connect to CDDB and name all your songs.

What i usually do to stop listening to a playlist is:

                        1. When a track is playing, press 'menu' which will go back a screen to the list of songs on current playlist, then press 'menu' again until it goes back another screen which will be your music section with all your playlists.

                        2. Then select whichever playlist you want. Providing of course you've made an alternative through either the iTunes or iPod way.

I hope this doesn't come across as pointing the obvious, as i'm just getting to grips with using the pod myself.

not even set up any playlists yet - just got it on shuffle/songs and playing through it randomly .... but 5000+ tracks to go through upto now

What I do when I want to stop listening is hit pause....duh! The machine will switch off automatically after a min. When I want to start back up, pressing play resumes the track where I left off.

Playlists pwn, make plenty of them. I tend to categorise my music into moods or to suit certain activities. Like my walking playlist, the music tempo on it matches my footsteps more or less.

What does everyone think of these sony fontopia buds? I've had them a while now and I think they're less than stellar. Noise isolating earbuds are great when sitting on a bus or plane drowning out outside noise. But they completely suck if I'm walking or cycling. I can hear my footsteps pounding on the ground thru them, it's distracting. Also, the sound of any slight breeze passing by is given an express ticket right to my eardrum. And I can even hear my heartbeat and breathing thru them when it's quiet. They tend to fall out a lot, regardless of the size of the bud. The small ones slip out, the larger ones push themselves out. GAH!

                            They're okay, but I don't reckon they're worth ?30.

using some sony fontopias at the mo - but after reading reviews on head-fi.org i have ordered a pair of shure E3c's (wanted some E5c's but the price is a bit silly) - the E3c's are another pair of canal phones (similar to the fontopia's) but the sound is better suited to the ipod ..... what i really want are a pair of the Ultimate Ears UE-10 pro's but at 900 dollars a pop combined with no UK outlets selling them i am finding it an hard purchase to make .... might upgrade the shure's to a pair on ety's at some point (or even better some custom-molded Sensaphonics 2x-Soft) but the shure's should see me 'break' the ipod in nicely

The Shure E series are great, they don't have the annoying problems of the sony fontopias. And they're great at isolating sound so you can listen comfortably at 1/3 volume. That's great for saving battery life. I imagine it could be a bit dangerous when out and about tho ;[
