Sounds like an isolated problem mate. Shame youv had problems. Its a lottery really. I havent had many problems apart from the odd freeze up on 2 iPods over 2 years.

Suprised there wasn't a few more views about the new 4G iPod.
My thoughts...
Received it on the 29th July, and so far, it's been fine. Since this is my first ever iPod, it's very nice. I've never seen one in the flesh before - so to speak.
First, i'll note down the negatives:
Though upon opening of the box, the pod was covered in circular adhesive marks. Mainly around the click-wheel, which took a while to clean off.
This isn't an isolated case, since i've read many with the same.
Another anomaly that i've read quite a fair number of users having, is the 'HD accessing & static sound effect' before each song. It was mentioned that recording on 'Apple lossless quality' it would happen. Which is not strictly the case, since i've had the same 'sound effect' happen on AAC & mp3 type files.
This usually last for a few seconds (and when the HD has to be accessed to locate the track, and if you are skipping 5 to 10+ tracks forwards or backwards. When you let the iPod go to the next track automatically, you don't hear it) and at the start of the track only. The sound is very slight
and hard to pick up first time - if you aren't looking for it. Plus you really need to be in a very quiet room to hear it.
A minor niggle.
The sound is easier to hear when the volume is set to 0 (zero) or/ and using the earbud earphones supplied. Though i'm not sure if this was present in other generation iPods?
Personally, i don't use in-earphones.
At the moment i'm using the Panasonic RP-HS44 out-earphones which clip onto your ears.
When i'm using these i cannot hear the HD accessing & static sound before each song.
I agree with Gareth C in that it can take ages to load the iPod up. Though this only occurs when it's in deep sleep.
If the sound anomaly is indeed a Q&A issue that cannot be resolved by future firmware updates - i just really cannot be bothered to return the unit. For fear of receiving another one with the same 'unique' feature.
The 'Shuffle Songs' doesn't shuffle from your selected playlist. More the whole library of music that's stored will be shuffled.
More thoughts later...Last edited by jimtendo; 17-08-2004, 22:53.

Just got my 4th gens yesterday. I got one 20Gb for the pending wife and one 40Gb for me.
I'd prepped a laptop with XP SP1 and a Belkin USB 2.0 PCMCIA card - this was a bit of a fiddle to get going but it is working fine now.
Out of the box it looks very nice + clean.
Setup was simple and I'm just using iTunes now to do the transfer of files. USB 2.0 is very fast for what it is.
I've had a quick listen to the sound quality and it sounds excellent even with the suppplied buds. Although I've have to have a proper listen to really rate it.
I haven't had the static issue on this 20gb, I'm setting up my 40gb tomorrow.
The user interface is of course to die for, although the slight raised click wheel looks slightly 'tacked on' but it works a treat.

I thought I would add a new post rather than editing the old one.
All 20Gb now filled up on the wife's 20gb and the sound is great.
I have used eUPod to boost the volume by 50% as the european iPods are capped in this respect due to EU rules and regs.
It was all veyr easy to setup and use even though I'd never even seen iTunes before..... I had advanced warning about a week ago that you must make sure you use MP3 tags to good effect otherwise you're f**ked. I used to rely on file names, but I spent 2 nights at the PC tagging up and it has made creating playlists really really easy.
The shuffle at once feature on the ipod is excellent - one press of a button and all your collection is randomized, ready for you to go Next Next Next Next Next NextNext Next NextNext Next NextNext Next NextNext Next Next
I'm very impressed by it though. I've heard it takes a few charges to get up to it's full 12 hour potential so I'll do some benchtests over the coming week.
