the 18 month contract thing nowadays is such a ball ache and tbh the reason i imported an iphone rather than wait.
Even with shipping it's cheaper than here and can be unlocked easily enough (i say that mine took me a long few hours with 2 instances i thought the thing was bricked).
TBH though its a standard deal here in the UK and sales of this thing before christmas will shoot through the roof i imagine. Will most likely be voted the number one must have chrimbo present this year etc etc.
Not as revolutionary as some would claim but a very nice piece of technology.
O2 must have paid through the nose though...

I'd sooner get an iPod Touch and the iPhone. While it's nice to have an all in one device, having to take out a contract is just nuts (I have a pay as you go phone and use about £5 of credit every 2-3 months on it!), and it's stuck with even less storage than the iPod Touch. (only 8gb max)

Only one carrier too is hardly great for consumer choice and competition. I hear sales of the phone are dropping in the US and I can't see it being anything like the success that iPod has been.

Have to say i agree with this, i would love an all in one device but there is no way i would pay that for one. The other problem is that if say you drained the batteries watching movies/listening to music then you have no phone, which would be a right pain.

I've been trying to reserve a couple of iPhones this morning but the staff at Carphone Warehouse knew nothing. The staff at O2 claim it'll cost you an upgrade and £200 just to reserve an iPhone on top of the £269 RRP and new contract. Although the O2 salesslug kept stating it's out on the 5th of November.
The Apple Store in Glasgow isn't taking reservations either.

Looks like I'll be in the queue on the 9th of November.
