I've had my iPod for all of about half a week, and it's already picking up surface scratches. Where the hell from, I have no idea, as it's only ever in the most cushiony soft of empty pockets. Any suggestions for how to minimise scratching, or is the $50 "iPod Armor" [sic] the only way around it?

Sorry phillai, would love to answer your question, but I'm working my way up in the features department

Phillai yes you can treat the Ipod as an external drive, I cant say about partitioning though, Im not sure why you would want to partition an Ipod anyways.

        phillai,

Yuo could partition it but that would nuke all the iPod specific files on it. To use it as an iPod again you'd have update it.

There's nothing to say the the updater won't notice the odd partitions and delete them.

You can just make folders on the iPod for diff files... that's what I do on mine.

        ashe,

There's nothing you can do... the light surface scratches can only be avoided if you seal the bugger in some case.

I personally don't care about light marks, only massive gouges so I keep it in that little cloth bag that came with it (the case scratches the screen up) and it's mostly fine.

          Argghhh Itrips.

I got the latest version (3rd Generation), and it only comes with software to link it with musicmatch jukebox, which the new Ipods dont even come with.

Anyone know a way round this?

Download iTunes for windows! It does it all for you.

If you plug in your iPod without ANYTHING it'll appear as a removable drive without the need for extra drivers.

This might sound like a naive question but stupidity has never stopped me before and it won't this time!

How does these things hold up under serious movement? I'm thinking of getting something like this for the gym (mainly for the cardio work) and am just a bit concerned about how long the hard drive is going to last being thrown about the place - during my 'high intensity' periods I tend to thrash around quite a bit!

They're reasonably tough and the HD is insulated plus the music is buffered into a 25MB cache but I don't think continuous high impact movement would be good for it.

You might be better getting a flash memory based drive.

So where is everyone importing from? Might as well take advantage of the exchange rate...

Ish, when you play a song on the iPod, it stores music 25 minutes ahead of where it currently is, this is to save battery and so you can run around. But, fortunately the iPod is really durable, I take mine to the gym and I've never had it jump or anything, and that is with Cardio and Muscular work outs!

If you are running very hard for extremely periods of time, then you may encounter problems... but honestly, I've never had a single jump from that machine. It is totally sound.

Obviously a Flash Machine would never jump, but they're either too expensive or have a severly limited memory...

The iPod is so small (20gb version I have, the 40 is thicker), I never even notice it when I sprint!

It's a real quality piece of kit.

Wondring if anyone else is experiencing this?

Recently my iPod has been playing tricks and games with windows. Aside from the aforementioned crashing, windows occasionally offers to scandisk my iPod when i boot it up with the preciousss connected. Never done this before until i reformatted my hdd two weeks ago.

                      Any ideas?

What sizes do they come in?

I've got about 10 albums that I listen too. So i'd only really need it for that.

Also, seen the new mini i-pods? They look cool.

I want to get some form of I-pod, but can't afford to splash out too much. What's the best deals going around for what I need?

                        Cheers

Well, I've had my 2G iPod for some time now and was thinking about buying a 3G one in the near future.....however, I began reading up on the rio karma......looks pretty damn good.......anyone used one?

007: At the moment it is 10 gig for about ?250, 20 gig for about ?300 or 40 gig for about ?400. Those are UK store prices, but importing from the US may be quite a lot cheaper. The minis are 4 gig, and I doubt will retail over here for much less than ?200, perhaps even more.

I have a 20 gig model, or which I have filled 8.2 gig so far. That is 2275 songs, or 165 albums.

If you have 10 albums that you like, then an ipod may be overkill.

I'm looking into picking up a 20GB model soon. I think it will be a dream come true.

Apple are offering free laser engraving as well, I think.
