Shame it sounds like the set doesn't have a separate DVI input.
HDMI/DVI on LCD televisions generally cannot be used for 1:1 pixel mapping though; they'll usually only take 1280x720 max.

VGA is described as the "PC" input on most sets and will take 1360x768 for 1:1 pixel mapping (with a 3px gap either side, as PC graphics cards can only render multiples of 8 )

Probably not much, if any point using VGA for X360 over component.

I can assure you my TV's DVI takes 1360x768, it's what I use. My screen of course being 1366x768, it loosing the 6 pixel for the reasons you describe above.

My set also supports 1360x768 through HDMI from my PC, which works out great for me, as I'm going to be plugging the 360 into the DVI (it being DVI-I, so completely compatible with VGA using an adaptor).

My set isn't exactly high end (LG 26LX2R, ?799 from Comet), so it's strange you say most sets have a max of 1280x720 through DVI...

I know the samsung models can only do the non standard formats though the PC port. and you aren't losing 6 pixels you are losing 4608 :P

I am tempted to buy an LCD but I was just wondering what they look like running a pc through VGA/DVI (well a mac to be specific). I was looking at 26 - 32 but what kind of resolution would you have to run your pc (or mac ) to make it the icons visible?

They just look like very high quality widescreen PC LCD's, the basic tech is the same.

You should run your PC at the resolution that matches your LCD... for example, my LCD TV has a native resolution of 1366x768. Therefore on your PC, you should be running at 1360x768 (you loose 6 fields because graphics cards can only output multiples of 8, but you don't notice).

ok i've decided to bite the bullet and am going to buy theSamsung LE26R41B .

Mp3players.co.uk have it for ?600 which is the cheapest ive found that also have it in stock. Anybody know of it being cheaper elsewhere, or of any price comparing services similar to unbeatable? I just want to be sure i'm getting the cheapest price possible

i am looking to buy either the Samsung LE26R41B LCD or the panasonic 42phd8 plasma screen.

i will be using it for DVDs and current/next gen consoles.

any ideas which is likely to be better.

well the samsung is about ?600 and the panny is ?2500, that could be major factor in deciding, also the plasma doesn't have the full HD resolution. It will accept high def sources but it won't look as good as the samsung

Both those screens are x768. Is that a problem if sources will be x720? It's fine if you are using it for PC browsing or something, but 720i/p sources will be scaled.

720p will be scaled on any screen anyway (even 1280x720) due to overscan. The only LCDs I've seen at that resolution are over two generations old now (in technology terms of course) so it's really a non-issue.

                      It looks stunning regardless.

A friend of mine has just bought the Samsung and I have to say I was pretty impressed with the pic quality. For ?600 it's a very good deal, and it came out top in a magazine test this month but it still looks like a road sign in my eyes.

Is it possible to get dead pixels on plasmas? If not, then are there other ways they can go wrong instead?

Had my Samsung for a few weeks now and I'm well impressed. For the price, you can't really complain. Don't know about a road sign either(!), I think it looks strikingly good The only downside was lugging the old Sony Wega out of the way. Damn I don't miss the size and weight of that behemoth.

Best thing I did was to get an Oppo DVD player to upscale my DVDs to 720p as my old player looked terrible over scart on the Samsung. Managed to borrow an Xbox to check out 720p Amped - Can't wait for next gen if it looks anything like that.

Not had any issues with tearing at all either. Bought mine from dabs and was classed as a 'Rome' model.
