    now touch wood is ok

demand they take it back and get a replacement

IMO this is the ONE good thing of the high street over the internet you can physically take it back if you need to...

andrewfee - how long had you had the set before it was reported as a problem ?

You are well within your rights to demand a refund from empire direct. Remember Empire direct have to deal with it, not you and certinally not Samsung.

Have a word with Trading Standards if you have any problems with Empire Direct, my sister works for TS so i can ask her any questions you have.

I know Samsung 32 LCD TV is popular choice, but are there a decent 37inch version of HDTV LCD for around 1 grand. I am planning to buy it in the next two months. I had a feeling 32 inch TV wouldn't be bigger enough for football viewing. My bed is about 6-7 feet away from the TV.

I also want to know what other models to watch out for apart from Hitchiai (Not interested in Toshiba as I don't like their products)

Jesus! My 32" CRT (equivalent to a 30" LCD) is just fine, from a good 10-12 feet back.

If you really want something that big, I'd recommend going for a Panny plasma and skipping LCD completely, though.

Go for a Sony or Panasonic one.
Which ones mate? I'm looking at buying a 26" LCD TV soon, and this problem has all but put me off Samsung. The Sony is a bit more expensive (~?200) but I've heard it is superior to the Sansung in almost every way. Is this true?

I had a couple of minor issues when I got it, but until the tearing thing, I didn't contact ED about them. So I've had it about 3/4 months now, presumably well past the point where they will offer me a refund. (that's what I was told when I called up before being told to contact Samsung) Although a month of that has effectively been "lost" as I didn't have use of the television.

I would not recommend a set that large (especially one that size at that price) for viewing at 6-7ft. At that distance, you should be looking at a 26" display. Anything closer and artifacting etc will show up pretty heavily. It's recommended to be 3x the diagonal of the screen away when watching SD/ED content, and 2x for HD stuff. I was planning on selling the 32" Samsung because my viewing distance was cut from around 10ft to around 6ft, and it simply doesn't look that good with SD sources. Any fixed-pixel display will look crap up closer than the recommended distances unless it's running at native res. If you do still want to pick up a big screen for
television viewing, be sure to buy a low resolution ED set like the Sharp P50 series or some plasmas.

Strange one. My Oppo DVD Player works fine through the DVI. However, I use a DVI-HDMI cable, I get sparkles. I assumed it was the cable, so I bought a DVI-HDMI adaptor for my DVI cable (the one I use to plug my Oppo into the DVI, so I know it works)... same results.
Attatching my PC to the HDMI with the same DVI-HDMI cable works fine though.

The Comet guy that came round reckoned it was a mismatch between the Oppo and the TV. No idea if he's right, he didn't seem a fool though. He's gone away to get a firmware update from LG to see if it will fix it. If not, I want an exchange. I did pay ?200 for the extended warrentee.

Given that my DVI works fine, I can live with it for now... but long term, I'm going to need that HDMI port.

Are we talking about a screen effect or real sparkles here?

FWIW, I don't get any with the Samsung HD-850

It may just be my Oppo conflicting with my TV's HDMI as the Comet guy says. No biggie, it works through the DVI.

I still wanna get the problem of the Component input being too saturated sorted anyway.

Righty, after andrewfee's problem with the Samsung, I've become even more confused about what to buy. So far it's between the Sony KDLS26A12, the Panasonic TX26LXD50 and the Samsung LE26R41BDX.

I've heard the Sony doesn't offer as good quality blacks as some of the other LCDs in the Bravia range, and it may be worth paying a little extra for the V series. Is this true? Also, which online retailer would come recommended for a purchase (homecinematv.co.uk, empiredirect.co.uk, and totaldigital.biz seem to have these TV's)?

Well I could alway move the TV 1 foot forward toward the wall and move meself to middle of the bed instead of edge of bed. I am planning to put it on the wall once I replace my wardrobe and redecorate my room in spring.

I have just received my Samsung 26" LCD TV and the DVD playback is stunning, but is there a way to get a good picture whilst playing PS2 games because at the moment it is incredibly blurry? I have tried changing sharpness etc but it doesn't alter it to any great degree.

EDIT: I have tried an s-video and the standard scart cable.

Don`t go with the panny 50 as it has no digital input, but the 52 does. But with the pannys have a 14ms response time compared to the sonys 8ms, they aint gonna match the sony`s for games even though they might be better on the TV watching side. As for the Sony, the V and the S use the same panels but the V has the wega engine which might be ever so slightly better when It comes to freeview, Sky and DVD than the S. But when It comes to Hi Def It won`t make any difference what so ever as no work has to be done on the image. At the end of the day It`s all down to how much you wanna spend.

But I recommend you phone up your local sony centre and ask for a Demo of the S/V series and take your xbox down there or dvd player and they will gladly help you out. As for retailer Homecinematv are great and even after a month of having my samsung le26r41b and telling them about the tearing and how pathetic samsung support was towards me they payed to have It picked up and credited me straight of.

Sorry, I meant the 52 series in my original post too.

I guess it'll probably be the Sony, since gaming on the set is probably going to outweigh everything else (including DVD). I might have a trip down to the local sony dealer to check out both sets, but TBH, I think I'll just have to go for the S series. Can't really justify the extra ?200-?300 on the V series for slightly better playback on other sources. I'm only using a 14" Sony CRT at the moment

I've also found the sony a bit cheaper online compared to homecinematv, but I'm gonna try and get a price match, since I've heard good things about their customer service.

                              thanks

                                Go Component on that set!
