LCD/Plasma/CRT/DLP - questions

hey guys,

just talked myself into buying a new monitor for my pc, I already have a 50" plasma so will probably only use it on the pc.

Would probably like an LCD, not too fussed over price either, been looking at some around ?250.

you guys got any recommendations ?

I see the green/yellow 'fringe' too, but rarely. LCD smearing/blurring annoys the hell out of me and is far more frequent.

Have you seen the latest Sony V2000 LCDs when they've warmed up? (usually only about 10 minutes after being on)

They're by far the best I've seen for LCD, and in my opinion, it's a non-issue now.

Aldi have been flogging a Tiveon 42" plasma HD Read with hdmi etc and good specs for ?999. All sold out mind - friend of mine got one, so it bodes well for the future price of larger screens. I'll check out the pic quality asap.

you can get a hd ready panny for 1299 though

ok guys it looks like im going to upgrading from a 19" samsung LCD computer monitor at (1280x1024) to a samsung 26R74.... the thing that has gotten me worried is how my pc will look. I presume i cant have the widescreen alternative to this resolution and will have to opt for a lower resolution. Any thoughts... is it worth it? will my pc look ****e on it compared to my lovely 19" (which ill sell to afford a hdtv)

1360x768 should look fantastic on the screen, however it's a little low for a lot of desktop work in my opinion.

It depends what you're using it for really.

I have my dedicated PC LCD (1280x1024) and LCD TV (1366x768) side by side, and I do find the LCD TV a little too limited in in space vertically, and find myself prefering to use the PC monitor (unless it's video, in which case I prefer the TV).

Then again, a lot of people still use 1024x768 as their desktop resolution, so 1366x768 must sound like luxury to many people.

If you have space for both screens, go for it. I couldn't be without both screen, having a video or Mp3 player on one screen and web browser on the other. Couldn't go back to a single screen setup.

I do that. Have my TFT and HDTV side-by-side. Nearly exclusively use the HDTV for PC now though.

I can't imagine stepping down in resolution to 1024x768.

^ so you have a screen that outputs in 1080? or will a screen that is native at 768 scale upwards (for vertical height onscreen)

My 1366x768 screen will display 1920x1080 from a PC... but obviously it's scaled. You get all of the real estate, but the text is damn fizzy and runs quite slow. I'd just stick to the screens native res.

For PC use, you have to stick to the native resolution, anything else will look rubbish, but for video content, 1080i should still look good if your set handles it well. (Samsung are an example of what not to do - they convert it to 540p, effectively throwing away half the resolution, and scale up)

Personally I'm still not convinced with Plasmas and gaming. (burn-in) I know there are people here who say that it's fine now

Most people get burn in and retension mixed up, i have never seen a Plasma get burn in from normal use, and from overuse ive seen both LCD and Plasma fall foul of burn in.

LG 26/32LX2R owners - New dash update sorts out the 360 over VGA, removing the washing and overscan!

Set your TV to DVI-PC, and set the 360 to 1280x720 (NOT 1360x768). It still looks 'paler' than it looks on DTV, but this is how it's supposed to look (you can compare to 1360x768 and see who much paler that looks...). There's no sharpening filters on PC mode either, much to my annoyance. But who cares, it's finally working proper

About the paler look, it's interesting to compare the PSP version of OR2006 with the PS2/Xbox versions, in order to check the TV colour setting (high, always too high)
