Looking forward to digging out Soul Calibur now I've got 2 days off ^_^

Read your page about how to get into the service menu Lyris, anything that needs changing?

Oh btw, seems this takes YCbCr over the Component (IIRC the digital variant of YUV?)... does anything actually use that? I know HDMI 1.3 accepts it too, but I'm assuming this is HDMI 1.1 or 1.2

Nah, leave the service menu alone on these.

Component's analogue so will only take Y/Pb/Pr. Apparently some British places like to swap the Cs and Ps around, though to add to this confusion.

The HDMI input takes YCbCr though, as well as RGB (for DVI backwards compatibility).

Thanks for all the info Andrew, I'll use that when my set arrives next week

Can anyone [Andrew, Lyris?] give me a similar Moron's Guide To Setup for the Samsung 40" N series, running the 360 via component through a Denon 1906 amp. On my previous Samsung I had to have the contrast really high, and the brightness was pumped up as well else games like Ridge Racer looks too dark in shadow areas.

Just out of interest, if you've got a PC hooked up (or if you can view it on the 360) how does this look to you?

I've found that a lot of panels show this as a pale orange-ish colour, whereas it should be a nice bright yellow. (viewing off-axis looks as it should on this laptop's LCD, but it's not right straight-on) So far, I've only seen two LCDs that display it properly. (although I haven't checked some of the older ones I had)

That's a creamy yellow here. Definately not orange..

What HDMI revision would this screen be anyway?

Looks like I've hit the same old problem of the 360 overscanning over Component because the screen takes into account the underscan of everything else that uses Component.

Was hoping to stick to Component, but I might have to use VGA if I can find my VGA switcher...

Good question, does anyone know what the newer HDMI versions added anyway? I think it was just DVD Audio support and such wasn't it?

It'll probably be 1.2 or something but don't quote me on it...

1.3 added RGB up to 40-bit or something like that.

Hmm, I guess it depends how you describe it - my sister said that it looks "creamy yellow" here on an LCD that shows it with too much orange.

It should look like a bright "Easter" yellow really:

My 30" Cinema display is the only LCD I've used that can render the light pale Easter yellow FFFFCC background of some of my pages correctly as it appears on my CRT monitor. Every other LCD, even after calibration, renders this color a little too orange.

My Cinema Display renders this correctly both out-of-the box and after calibration. I have no idea why it looks so different between LCD and CRT monitors. It just does.
The Sharp renders it perfectly, as did the Sony MFM-HT75W I had, if I remember correctly. It looks as it should on this laptop if I tilt it too far back (so the image gets darker) but obviously that's not an option.

D'oh, I had forgotten about that on the BRAVIAs. What annoys me more is that they do have adjustable overscan, it's just that you can only add to it. (I guess the range is 5-7%) I bet they could have had it going from 0-10% but thought that would be too "confusing" for people.

You're probably best with Component - the 360 looked crap over VGA on the V-Series. (you have to use 1360x768, which means the 360 does the scaling, and it looks really soft)

I don't mean it looks orange, just compared to how it's supposed to look it does.

I'd take a picture, but it's probably meaningless unless you're viewing on a CRT monitor.

EDIT: Ok, well that's interesting. My cameras can't tell the difference between it being rendered on the Sharp or this MacBook's LCD, but there's a very noticeable difference. If you've ever seen it on a CRT, or can hook one up next to it, you'd notice it immediately.

I trawled 15,000 shops today (well about 5)

I saw the Samsung N73 Tv running next to the newest Toshiba model

THe toshiba was noticeably nicer looking.
Also they have increased the amount of supported resolutions for VGA mode, so I'm gonna take my 360 along with me tommorow and give it a whirl.

Just hooked up the Dreamcast to the Sony Bravia KDL-32S2030 over VGA - fecking gorgeous ^_^

Strange though, by default it actually maps it 1:1 (i.e small 640x480 window), but if you change the Screen Format to Full1 it rescales it to proper full screen, and looks brill (Full2 stretches it to 16:9, but Full1 keeps the 4:3 AR).

I've got an urge to play through Shenmue now!

Shame I have to keep unplugging the PC to play the DC... does anyone know where to get DC VGA boxes w/ VGA passthrough?

It's depressing how much better the Dreamcast looks than anything else from a video standpoint, isn't it?
