Yeah That is solely what the VGA port on my 68 is used for.

360 set to 1280*768 then widened to fill the screen and keep the aspect ratio.

I'd assume you rate it highly then

Anyone care to explain the basic differences for Sony Bravia LCDs between the S, U, V, W and X series?

          In short:

+Crystal clear VGA input with superb colour balance
+Rich, colourful and sharp component over both 720p and 1080i
          +Good, deep black levels
+Excellent handling of standard definition content (only tried PS2/Xbox)
+Plenty of options to control screen size, backlight variance and numerous video processing choices (there are some popular sets which don't allow control over the backlight or video processing)
+Nicely proportioned aesthetic look to the unit and very light

-Headphone output doesn't offer enough options
-Viewing angles don't seem to be good as Sony claim without imbalancing contrast ratio

          Hope that helps.
You have the 32" or the 26"? Not too bothered about headphone options as I don't tend to use them for TV viewing/gaming - any chance you could comment further on the viewing angles thing?

Would you recommend the TV personally, or given your experience with it opt for something else in the price range? Cheers

I've no concerns with the viewing angle on the 32" version myself - I actually use it as a slight angle anyway due to desk positioning.
I'm certainly glad I bought the screen, though the 1x HDMI is plain stupid on sony's part.

Mine is the 26" you link to.

Out of my experience (Samsung R5/R7, Cheap Acer, LG LX/LC) the Bravia is the best I've used. The VGA, clarity of component over 720p, 1080i and overall colour system is extremely good.

Another thing, and to add what Shakey Jake mentions about composite, is that Component and VGA are ghost free which is a problem that has cropped up on four out of the five sets above. As for the viewing angle situation - it's the position of the backlight which seems to illuminate the very left and right side of the screen, meaning if you view it from an acute angle the screen's level of contrast becomes imbalanced. It depends on how sensitive you are to this problem as to the extent of how it's going to bother you - it doesn't bother me much personally though I could see how it might for others which is why I mentioned it.

Shakey is right that there should be another HDMI connection considering the competition right now, but the usual bases are covered. 2 Scart (one RGB wired), 1 VGA input, 1 Component input, 1 S-Video input and 1 HDMI input).

The strongest areas of the Bravia are its colour system (which is the best I've encountered out of the LCDs I've used), it's general sharpness and clarity (the set has a good de-interlacer which means 1080i, particularly with the 360, looks outstanding) and the control you have over choosing what processing filters to use (this might not seem a big deal, but after watching the artifacting caused by the Samsung's own video processing and in the Acer for me, having control in being able to switch various settings on and off is very important) and also how you want to control the backlight (as well as a 1-10 light level there's a three-tiered power settings level for its overall strength, helpful for viewing various content through DVD and Games where overall brightness and black levels may need to be tweaked via various profiles).

Also, and this is a huge full circle for me, I first intended to buy a HDTV to play my current generation games in progressive scan before I purchased in 360. Imagine my horror when the sets I ran 480p through looked close-to-unplayable compared to what I was used to on my CRT. Now, after so many different televisions, I've finally found one that can accomodate SD and HD with a level I'm comfortable with.

                      It's the S2030. I haven't had experience with the U series I'm afraid.

Just to say something though - the televisions in the similar 26" range (most notably the Samsungs and the LGs) are about a ?100 or so cheaper, so it depends what you want to do with regards to saving money or not. Some may think the S-Series is overpriced.

The scaler in my JVC LCD set has been bothering me for a while now and having seen some of the pics posted in here it's starting to bother me even more.

I've had doubts about how effective the set is at scaling the image for a while and I know still photos (like the ones posted in this thread) won't give a true representation but like I say it's beginning to annoy me.

Using Gears as an example, do those with newer sets like the Bravia and Toshiba get noticeable jaggies when playing?

I'm trying to determine if it could be down to Gears (which might have no AA as it was reported a while back) or the set but at HD resolutions I still get noticeable jaggies on Marcus when he's moving (such as around his arm plates) and on the edge of weapons when zoomed in firing (noticeably the Torque Bow). Some bits of scenery are also jaggy (for example on Act 4, the last by one chapter, if you turn around and face the gates before you go up the stairs to the house, the symbol at the top is quite jagged).

To clarify, the game is far from unplayable (and still looks stunning) but looking around I hear people saying that they don't see many jaggies and it makes me wonder.

Of course it's not just Gears I get slight jaggies on but also other games like Splinter Cell and Vegas. Again nothing much to cry about but they're still there.

I'm aware this is subjective without pics of my own (I have tried but my camera isn't up to capturing stuff) but I'm wondering if my set is actually cutting the mustard.

                          Comment

I get no jaggies on Marcus when he's running or walking, so I'll assume you mean when he's stationary and breathing (very slight). Jaggies are more evident on DA and Vegas than Gears anyway. As for the jaggies (extremely slight again) on the Torque Bow - yes they exist. Same with the broken decoration on the gate you mention on Act 4.

                            Your set is fine.

There are but the jaggies when he's moving. Mostly it's around his arm plates (and the joins in the armour) and the weaponry on his back, even if he's moving at full speed (but not the roadie run obviously). They're slight but definitely there for me.

Cheers Concept, it's good to know that my set's not as bad as I thought it might have been
