The problem is this may have a knock on effect European release dates for the PS3. The reason the turnaround is so fast for the 360 between most US and Euro releases is because more and more games are 60hz only these days and feature the same HD resolutions, so localisation isn't as extensive as it was.

I guess this means that Konami and the like will probably still be favouring the November (US) -> March (Europe) release model. If Sony keep to their promise of ensuring the PS3 remains region free it won't be a problem. If they don't then we could just be back to the same situation we found ourselves in with the PS2 in Europe.

Guess it just reconfirms to wait a good few months to see how the conversion and release situation pans out.

Ok i just want to confirm and get this straight, cos all this is confusing the hell out of me... If i run a Pal game on my U.S PS3 in high-def it will 100% run identically to it's U.S counterpart with no slowdown or otherwise performance issues at all?

HD programming in Australia is at 50hz, which is a concern for me. I was worried the games might be 50hz in HD as well. Good to hear that they aren't... I hope.

Uk HDTV is in 50hz too, but thankfully some brightspark came up with the HDready standards which means that if you have a tv it will support all the various different formats.

Because of this I'm gonna have to get Tekken from the US store instead of the UK one, and for some reason it's $20 on there.

OT a bit but I just sold my 360 HD-DVD drive as I couldn't tell any difference between SD and HD DVD - I do watch my stuff pretty big though.

HD is just a simple resolution upgrade that they've decided to market. Badly.

So is it software or hardware that's selecting the referesh rate? If I got a UK PS3 and US games, would they run at 60Hz (on a normal TV, I mean)?

I assumed the PS3 would be like the 360 and make 60Hz mandatory in games.

My guess is that it's hardware thats selecting the Refresh Rate at the moment so hopefully a future update will cure it.

On another note i've just had Virtua Fighter 5 (PAL) shipped from my Rental Company so I'l try it on my USA PS3 tomorrow via RGB Scart and see what happens.

I have the uk Tekken. And it looks very well optimised. I ran it while watching HD vids of the US version. It's hard to see a difference, speed wise.

Well I need to get the US Version since my current TV is SD running through RGB so the Euro version won't run, otherwise I'd just buy that.

But the problem is that we are having to 'rely' on optimisation .. and this is not something that can always be trusted. How long will it be before developers simply give up and take the 'take it or leave it' attitude?

I'm also concerned about the length of time it will take for PAL games to make it to Europe if 'extra work' is required per-game. You only need to look at Crackdown, Pro Evolution Soccer, etc.. on the 360 to see that your 'expected' to be able to take 60hz. They are not losing sales because of it.. so why are Sony risking losing sales because of this 50hz problem.

I will not be able to buy a game for my PS3 until I have it 'verified' (or played a demo) that the game works well in the enforced 50hz (SD). Europeans who are concerned will not be able to trust any reviews, because they will be concentrating purely on the score of the 60hz version. So we have essentially being left out of in the cold.. Fortunately my 360 and even Wii experience is not like this.

Also, you're going to have to be segregated with online games like they used to do on xbox1 (Burnout) where you have to have seperate lobbies for 50 and 60hz players as it ****s up if you play together - Hence the 60hz enforcement on some 360 titles.

50hz and 60hz work fine together on the PS3's online modes, though. They all run at the same speed, just with SD PAL owners missing frames to keep up.
