So if you're in the UK with a SDTV which is 60hz compatable then the PS3 will still only play in 50hz?

    Oh bloody hell Sony!

      Yep, thats spot on.

However if you're running HD, ie 720/1080 then it's perfectly fine and 60hz via HD Output is no problem

Although I could afford it I'm not convinced in HD yet espically with no DVD format settled on and prices stupidly high. I've got a nice Sony SDTV at the moment and that 50hz news will really stop me getting a PS3 now.

I'm convinced Sony could of easily made it 60hz on SD. Why not put in the extra effort?

Personally i'm expecting it to be an addition in a later firmware but for the meantime why don't you consider getting a USA machine?

I got mine from VGP delivered for less than the price of a UK one...plus with Movietyme and VGP selling PS3 games at the prices they are they'l always be cheaper than the likes of Play.com etc.

Should you decide you want a PS3, get a US one. Plays back in SD at 60hz and doesn’t need a stepdown. Get one now for true backwards compatibility too but that will change come April apparently.

Oh and just a bit of an update, I've just got a friend of mine with a PAL PS3 and a SD TV to put a Region 0 60hz DVD in his ps3....it plays but apparently the screen constantly judders.....Oh dear Sony.

N they wonder why we import machines. This is ridiculous.

To be fair, NTSC machines won't play PAL-encoded Region 0 discs at all.

I just wonder why Sony have complicated it to this degree. Why not have every machine capable of outputting 480 and 576 resolutions and be done with it?

Good question, how annoying, yet another Sony mess up!

Because they never think before they announce something or make something.
This will partially be down to the lack of hardware scaler, they will probably fix it with an update at some point, when is anyones guess.

From what i've read up on it's pretty clear, If you run your console HD with any connector then none of it's a problem.

However the PAL Console and PAL Games DO NOT run in 60hz and DO NOT have an option to change if you're running Standard Definition

Most of the compliants have been about Ridge Racer 7 as apparently it's not optimised for 50hz and suffers from slowdown and a couple of graphical errors. I've also heard from a few people that Sonic has a problem on PAL Machines as well with audio, FMV hiccups and just random errors on a whole.

It's totally shocking to be honest and i'm glad I imported. I fully sympathise that it's a Hi-Def Console but the larger majority of Europe are still on SD sets

I was hoping to pick up a few PAL games but for the meantime i'm gonna play it safe. My HD Panel died a few months back and it's out of warrenty so it's back to my 6yr old SD TV for the foreseeable future.
Can someone confirm that at HD resolutions, the PAL games will look identical to the NTSC games, and run just as fast?

All of the HD resolutions are all standardised so there will be no compatibility there.

So how about the copy of PAL Blast Factor I bought, running on a SD tv? It's full screen, but I have no idea whether it's running in 50 or 60 Hz? (Same story with Gripshift)
