You can mod the slim psp, but you need the pandora battery

I am in the same boat, need to get hold of a battery from somewhere

1.5 kernel on a slim? Looks that way

If he gets that running it pretty much confirms Dark_Alex's status as a god.

I played with Skype today and it works brilliantly. A bit of a delay on the voice but nothing that you'd notice if you weren't both in the same room (we were when we played with it), and it'll be excellent to have next time I'm abroad. Just head into the nearest wi-fi hotspot and I can call home for less than a local call

So, my slim just arrived, brand new, I don't know what FW its on as its charging.

.. Am I right in thinking the battery can downgrade any firmware anyway? so I'm fine upgrading this to 3.9 official for the time being.. ? thanks

Yeah, you can upgrade to normal 3.90 without a problem. The battery will just wipe it and put the custom firmware on there so keep upgrading with impunity.

I got my slim today as well and the first thing I did with it was to use my battery to get the firmware on there, even before I'd turned the thing on to test it. The only 1.5 kernel homebrew that I still had were those excellent CPS-1/CPS-2 and Neo Geo emulators so I got those upgraded to the newer slim versions (fun fact: the extra RAM on the slim means that you no longer have to mess around creating cache files for the CPS-2 games, although you still do for the Neo Geo), and spent a while getting a couple of games working when they stopped for some reason. Now everything's as it should be

Skype is really cool, too. I'm going to have to find myself a Talkman mic or something for next time I go abroad.

Slightly O/T but can anyone point me in the right direction of the CPS 1/2, Neo Geo and N64 emulators please? Wasn't sure which ones were best?

I've been very impressed with the DAX updater, so simple now it's all intertwined with the normal update operation. Sweet.

For CPS-1/2 and Neo Geo you definitely want these ones (scroll down to version 2.3.1, the latest one). They run everything at full speed, including the insane ones like Marvel vs Capcom and the most recent NG games - SVC Chaos, Garou: Mark of the Wolves, etc.

The best N64 emulator is Daedalus, but I'm not sure how good it is having never used it. Judging from videos it runs pretty well but has sound issues.

I tried it a month or so ago and only a very small number of games (< 20 at a guess) are supported. The majority of games that do run tend to suffer from seriously low framerates & other issues.

Super Mario 64 runs better than most but does suffer from very bad sound glitches. In the castle area the game runs pretty smoothly (with sound disabled), but when you enter the actual levels the frame rate tends to stutter a bit.

That said it's impressive from a technical point of view and worth a download if you are curious....just don't expect a nostalgic trip down memory lane though!!!

The CPS1, 2 & MVS emus Nekofever mentioned run very nicely though

i too am a n00b - and still cant get the neo geo mvs emu working! its the creating cache files and converting the roms bit... is there a rom converter that works on a mac? its now become like a holy grail to get this working on my psp!

daedalus - n64 emu, as mentioned doesnt support many games but Smash bros looks amazing because of the higher res.

There is a ROM convertor for the Mac but it only works with CPS2PSP/MVSPSP 2.0.6 and is no longer supported. Still, if that's any good to you it's available here.

I'm on a Mac and just use Windows through Parallels to do the ROM conversion. It was a pain in the arse to get my whole collection done but once I had the caches done I burnt them to DVD so that I had them safe and wouldn't have to do it again.

Been reading this thread all week and it got me excited as my PSP has been sitting in a draw for the last year. Right it is a 1.5, or it was I just went and switched it and found that some bugger has upgraded it to version 2.

I have been trying for the last few hours to downgrade it to 1.5 without much luck. What options do I have, the best would be upgrading to another firmware and then put custom on it. Any advice of what I should do?

Depending on which motherboard it is and whether you have any of the games with downgrade exploits (currently early versions of Liberty City Stories - if you have it and it has the 2.00 update on the disc that's the one you need - or Lumines) you can do it that way. If you have the original motherboard type you can use the very first downgrader as well.

Unless you have access to a Pandora battery you'll have to downgrade to 1.5 before you can install custom firmware anyway.

I have a US launch v1.5 psp, no custom firmwares.... is it worth me flogging it and getting a PSP-2000. Can you haxxor the newest slims? I'm mainly intrested in remote play stuff particually with PlayTV on the horizon but the neo geo stuff sounds interesting.
