Excellent, thanks mate. I keep running out of space on my 60gb, i'm going to get one of those PlayTV things and i can see alot of the space being used on that.

I don't mind deleting my games and downloading them again, Its the important things i want to back up like my different accounts and game saves. I'll have enough room for stuff like that on my ipod, so thats fine for me.

      What i did was

backed up using an external drive
then created a folder on the drive called UPDATE
downloaded the ps3 update file and stuck that on the external drive in the UPDATE folder
removed old and inserted new drive
made sure my external drive was plugged in
then when it asked me to provide a source with the update on it reads it from the external drive.
then it formatted my internal one
than ran a restore from the PS3 menu

      worked a treat for me
well despite ordering my hdd before some of you, it finally turned up today!!!
i too had to download sony firmware onto a usb memory stick - everything worked surprisingly smoothly. backup and restore was painless. in fact i didnt even have an issue with the screws, (maybe it was cus i already had some small screwdrivers from tinkering with my macbook memory) - no probs.

only downside i have had tho is my soul calibur 4 save game didnt work. so a quick trip to game faqs solved that

edit: no it didnt cus the save file is locked to the system that created it. its gonna take me aaaaages again!!!!

It shouldn't be locked to the system, i transferred my SC4 save data when i changed the HDD and it works fine? o_O

I noticed that problem with Soul Calibur 4 saves trying to use one from Gamefaqs. I got the impression it was tied into a specific user. I was just looking for a complete save (since managed to get the Apprentice unlocked anyway). Also some saves won't copy to a memory stick (I was backing up my saves the other day to an SD Card). I didn't check the Backup facility to see if that can just do saves to a suitable device. May do that anyway just to be safe...

I swapped my 60Gb drive for a 250 Gb almost 3 months ago. I had an unused 160 Gb 3.5" drive which I was able to format to FAT32 and use for a complete backup. It took about an hour and three quarters to backup and again to restore but at least I didn't have to re-install my games, I did have slight issues with the new disk but it formatted OK after a second restart.

dunno what happened to the sc4 save. it appears it was corrupted...

i had to also authorize the system again to allow me to use games/ content downloaded from the psn store.

everything (apart from sc4 save) working fine now!

I bought a 320gb drive. Installed it ok. When I first switched on the PS3 and formatted the drive it said I had 263GB/298GB What happened to the other 35GB?

This is before I restored my backup.

I know that 298GB is the correct starting amount. But why did the extra 35GB disapear before I'd recovered the backup?

when I had the 60GB drive in I had the correct 55GB/60GB on the fresh HDD.

Also, since restoring the backup, all my trophies have been erased.

              Any ideas?

Not a clue mate, but I had exactly the same. Perhaps the O/S can't recognise more than 300GB?

It's completely normal, the missing 30gbs are used by the FAT (File Allocation Table), which always consume a relatively small part of the HDD. Bigger the drive, bigger the FAT will be. Unfortunately the PS3 uses FAT32 for its system drive which isn't exactly the most effective FAT in terms of space occupied.

I just find it odd that a 320GB drive loses the standard 20GB, as it would on a PC. Only to loose another 35 before you put anything on it.

As I said: the 60GB original HDD only lost 5GB when you boot up the PS3 as new.

Any ideas if i can get my trophies back?

Just got my trophies back. seems you have to play the game in question. Then check and it synchronizes. It's worked for p.j eden, anyhow.

Just put in my new HDD. Is it worth doing a full format, it says it would take 18 hours?

Not if you don't need to. I'd imagine it's similar to the 'full format' on a PC, where is scans sectors at low level as well, and there's rarely a benefit unless your drive is already having problems (and you say it's a new drive, so...).

Don't know, however know it took me over three hours to (fully) format my 60gb one.

Does it give you the option to do a quick format ? (which takes minutes).

Yeah it does, only takes half a minute. I was just making sure whether it was really needed or not, i always do it with a new hdd on my pc.

Just ordered that 320GB from Play. What have you guys done with the old? I think I'll just backup, format then throw it on eBay.
                                Haha

Q: sorry to sound thick but are you sure that the software for the PS3 that can play the games is on the Hard drive and not in the PS3? 19-Sep-08
