LOL .. Seriously whats the point in getting Windows 8 and then removing Metro ... Defeats the object really ..

I really can't see what the fuss is all about , Windows 8 is perfectly usable with most issues coming from either people doing an in place upgrade of Windows 7 (which you never should do) or just not understanding how things work.

Well, for me personally, the point of the upgrade was a cheap way to access all my RAM.

For most people though, they won't have the choice. Installing tools to avoid Metro is easier than wiping the hard drive and reinstalling an old copy of Windows 7 for people who buy new machines that have 8 preinstalled.

well i have no interest in metro but i would like a os system thats more upto date faster booting more efficient and perhaps makes better use of more modern things like ssd and the fx amd processors and i really do need to do a reinstall as my computer is very slow but no longer have my windows 7 disc

Then use Windows 8 , just because Metro exists on it does not stop you from using it .. I guess that was my point.

Windows 8 seems to have a number of under the hood improvements. For this reason some people may want to upgrade. The problem most people are having is not that they don't understand how things work; I'm prepared to learn new ways of doing things. The problem is that when you find out how things work now you very quickly realise that they work in a way that is worse than it was before. New UIs are supposed to be an improvement over the old ones. Fix problems. Metro does neither of these things. It makes things 'possible' on touch devices at the expense of making them more awkward for desktops.

I don't get why it doesn't have a "desktop or touchscreen?" option at install time. They could still have elements of Metro but tweaked for mouse-only users. I actually believe this has to come - surely it can't continue like this without losing customers? Businesses will ditch and fast.

LOL ... I don't think its quite that bad .. you make it sound like Windows 8 is completely unusable, which is certainly not the case. I don't generally even go into Metro most of the time .. there is no need to once you are on the desktop, which is one mouse click , not exactly difficult.

I will agree that it isn't exactly required for businesses, but then generally most businesses do not switch to a new OS overnight .. there are plenty out there still actively using Windows XP, let alone Windows 7. Plenty of time for M$ to tweak as required.

Windows 8 certainly seems to be a marmite OS ... Can't see what all the fuss is about.

Come on now, that's not true is it?

I never thought I'd ever actually say this, but just because something is newer, it doesn't mean it's necessarily better or more 'fit for purpose'. It doesn't matter if the OS is ?1 or ?100, there is little point in upgrading if the previous iteration of the OS fulfils people needs better.

I'm sure Metro is perfectly usable once you get used to it. But if people are finding the new interface to be more awkward or inferior, it seems slightly strange to continue to champion the latest iteration of the OS over previous iterations that would appear to to be a better fit. I've read plenty of perfectly valid criticisms of Metro in this thread.

It boots to Metro really fast and in general runs really well - I've not had any unexplained pauses or other weirdness that I'd occassionally get with win7.

Also, here's a tip: while in metro, go to settings on the charm bar and then click "tiles" at the top and "show admin tools".

I'm going to pay for the 15 quid* upgrade offer to save a few knicker*, I'm not installing it yet though because I can't be arsed, and I'm busy playing Bayonetta.

*I don't have a pound sign on this keyboard.

It's $18 here which works out at 9 quid. Bonus!

I couldn't get the upgrade to work for me, is there a trick to it?

Do you mean actually purchasing it? Or the install?

                              Purchasing it,

I've got an older windows 7 PC with a key on the bottom, but the website wouldn't accept that, how did people do it without using COA?

Tell it you bought a custom PC from Scan.co.uk and it won't even ask you for a win 7 key.
