    under PC brand?

There isn't a scan option and if I put www.scan.co.uk as the OTHER retailer, it still asks for a Windows 7 key.

Ah, well that's what I did and it didn't ask me for any more details. They must have updated it I guess. Sorry dude.

Seriously ... as far as I am concerned I can't see what the issue is.

Maybe its because I am in the industry and work with it every day (or since its been in beta), I guess its my job to know how these things work, but I really can't see what the issue is. You still get Windows at the end of the day, just with an interface on the front of it, which doesn't get in the way in any way shape or form.

It's not like you can't use normal Windows because of Metro ... It's one mouse click away when the machine boots up, and as long as you have put your shortcuts on the desktop and or the Task Bar then its no different to Windows 7, other than shutting down and a couple of other little bits ...

As time moves on people will get used to it , there are always naysayers when new Windows OS's come out, I still know people who hate Windows XP with a passion, let alone Windows 7. And whilst M$ will probably give people the ability to have the start menu back at some point, I really don't see why they need to other than maybe for the corporate world.

In a few years time there will be quite a few people out there who won't even remember how Windows used to work, and will wonder how we ever managed with that 'old and clunky' interface. I guess some people like change, and others don't.

I'm not saying Win 8 is unusable. Once you find out the new way things work it's not that big of a deal but I find it astonishing that you can't see what the issue is. The issue is all the things that everyone has spoke about in this forum and all over the net. It's not an insurmountable issue but it's an issue. All visual cues are removed right from the very first login screen which appears to have no way to allow you to log in. Once you work it out that just doing SOMETHING - be it a click or a keystroke - will allow you to log in you remember that and obstacle one is a thing of the past. But, these are issues that make the experience worse for desktop users and, importantly, for no gain whatsoever. There's no benefit to these UI changes, only downsides. Once you get used to them you don't become more efficient than you were on Win 7.

And how are you supposed to shut down? ctrl-alt-del shows the power button, but surely there must be a way to do it via a touch screen or mouse too? Or are they assuming you hit the power button on your tablet (or PC)? My PC is in a cupboard.

What the f**k is the Charms Bar? Does it have gypsy's in it?

If this is not proof that there is something sour within Windows 8 I don't know what is. There are about 4 'hidden' menus in either metro style (whatever they call it this week) and one in the bottom right of the desktop and another one at the left.

TBH I use Ctrl+Alt+Del or Alt+F4 to shutdown. I can't be arsed looking for another inexpiable hidden menu within a menu.

I am back off to boot in Linux Mint or Windows 7.

I still think the main issue, is that there was no tutorial on how to use this stuff and it is all well hidden. If you think of the Android OS it tells you about the features from the get go. Even older Windows versions like XP had a wizard to follow. And I assume there is something on Apple OSX, but Windows 8 goes here is a new UX go or it.

We're all (mostly anyway) agreed that Win 8 is a dreadful UI change but if you HAVE to work with it then the solution to getting to all the things you used to before is to just start typing from the start screen. Start typing what you want to get to and the results appear on the left. On the right is a list of all the categories the found items live in e.g. documents, apps

                    You are kidding me....
I didn't think of clicking on that. I assumed it was settings for the power profile e.g. time till screen standby and stuff....
Why on earth isn't power down a standard thing on the charms bar.... Lamers.

I've added shortcuts to my taskbar
                      Shutdown:
                      C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe -s -t 00
                      Restart:
                      C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe -r -t 00

The answer to almost every "WHY THE HELL" question is because this OS UI was designed for touch screen devices with desktop ways of doing the same thing bolted on. How the **** is shutting your PC down a "setting"?

Good tip Charles, I shall do that too I think.

A common excuse by the Microsoft defense force is that hibernate is so fast now that instead of powering down you just hibernate by pressing the power button. Thing is, with SSDs booting from cold is so fast why would you bother hibernating? lol!

Windows 8 uses hibernation regardless of how you shut the machine down now .. Even from a cold boot there is hibernation technology used. That's why Winddows 8 boots so quick, so you are using it whether you like it or not.

In the end I am not going to convince anyone that Windows 8 is the next best thing, and that's fair enough however once tablet style machines are more common place with more power (which they will) you will need this type of hybrid interface, M$ are just getting in there early before anyone else comes up with something, that's all.

Trust me in a few years time you will wonder how we ever did without it.

You could of just set the power button to be shutdown

Goes to cupboard. Opens door. Kneels down to find PC. Stabs button. Oh. That was reset. Bugger.
