The Update Informaation for this 8 hour update is now available in the POL Viewer.

Just going through it, so far there are a lot of changes/modifications to Ballista, ****loads of new BCNM battles and the rather exciting news that a THF can now stack Sneak Attack with their Hide ability and deal critical damage from any position (not just from behind).

The ramifications this has for dumping a load of hate onto the tank mid-battle with SATA is immense ^^

I will edit this post as I go through the info if I discover more exciting stuff =D

oooh thf update wOOt! I just got Hide myself, it has a 5 minute recast timer right? Thinking about it though, it's impossible to do a macro for sneak, trick, hide + viper bite* cause there isn't enough lines in the macro editor to do that. Looks like it's gonna have to be used for normal physical attacks or viper bite* if you can trigger it manually quick enough.

I like these mannequins, I've wanted them for a while now. I bet all the japs gonna start pounding this new quest soon as maintenance is over heh

Sort of agree with the Half dude. When I saw 52 pages of updates I was expecting to be really excited despite the 8 hours downtime but there seemed to be page after page of Ballista information which is not something I'm bothered about yet.

However, then I considered 2 things.

1. Each update so far has introduced new equipment to be used within game (none of which is stated explicitly in the update notes). E.g. last time we had new lvl60 RSE gear and Latent Effect earrings etc. There is bound to be lots of new stuff this time too (probably rewards from new BCNM battles).

2. The reason this update is so big as it making preparations for the Chains of Promathia expansion. COP is going to rule so I'm willing to put up with this downtime because of that fact alone.

I just hope there is better equipment suited to each job. As it stands, there is a big gulf between 'sets' of good equip. For example, all the good WHM stuff that I have at the moment is around level 30-40, even though I'm level 52 myself. Excluding Dark Staff and my hairpin, of course. However, there isnt any decent stuff on the horizon for ages, except for the next leap which comes with AF armour between 50-60. *sigh*. I really want some kickass equipment, but noo.

I also want better spells from this level onwards for WHM. Up until this level, there has been a whole range of various enfeebling, enhancing, divine, curing spells etc., but from here on it's all stuff like Protect IV, Cure V, Shell III, Regen III etc. (just upgrades of existing spells) which is frankly quite boring
m(_ _)m. Bah, I just want a WHM equivalent of Refresh .

Unfortunately, I think a WHM Refresh is unlikely.

IIRC Refresh was added as a way of giving the RDM a more defined role in the game as originally they were generally unwanted and weren't getting invites. So SE gave them the Refresh spell and all of a sudden, a RDM becomes almost a necessity in lvl40+ PTs.

Giving Refresh to WHM will likely unbalance that once again

But Tox is right, a SMN sub will be many times better for you than BLM.

Have you all read the 2 year statistics thing, about most popular job choices and number of players , linkshells etc. Its a good read.

Also some new areas are shown on the Chains of Promathia area, the beach bit looks cool with the new fishing boat thing.

Unfortunately Wdge, whilst the update is currently downloadable, there are still another 6 hours projected downtime whilst SE do some sort of maintenance. Why a 25 minute download requires 8 hours maintenance I don't know, but it means none of us will be online tonight ;_;

Heya guys.
I was away in the US for 6 weeks. I got back a couple of days ago, and looked through my mail. Opening up a rather chunky parcel, I realised that I'd been picked for the FFXI Euro beta test. Result!
So yesterday I decided to install the 6 gigs of game and try it out on my 56k modem.
Playonline first needed an hours worth of updates. Rather a lot for a front-end, but there you go.
After twiddling my thumbs for a while it was time to go! Excitedly, I went through all the registration bits, navigated my way through the menus system to the FFXI section and clicked the Play button.
Updates needed.
Ok... it's an online game. They all need a lot of updates.
My jaw hits the floor... 9850 files!!!
So I let it go... and it goes relatively quickly. Under an hour, in fact!
Yay! says I. But wait! There's more to download. Another.... 1552 files.
"Well, that'll take no time at all", says I. No such luck. Estimated time: 7 hours.

Le sigh. I'm still waiting.

Well! That was quite fun. After downloading all the updates creating my character (an Elvaan Monk) I was beckoned into my home town of Sir'loiny or something like that. I witnessed an over-zealous guard attempting to chastise the good knights, but never fear! Milady is here to save the day. Hurrah!
Then he asked me what I wanted to do. Well, seeing how I'm a monk, I should help people.
"Ahh", replied the guard, "yonder lies forth a woman who in distress paces forth and back afront her olde abode."
I left forth with a cry of "Avast!" and charged forth to calm the poor woman's woes.
"Ointment for me 'usband. Go give it to 'im, e'll be sad without it."
So I charge out into the wilderness without any concern for my own safety. Why, if the husband didn't get the ointment, who KNOWS what could happen?!?
Running around outside, I didn't see anyone of the husbands description, but I did see lots of rabbits. Not just any rabbits, WILD rabbits. This could be dangerous! What if they got inside the town and bit people. Not on Magnakai's watch!
Several rabbits later, I got a level up. Yay! I danced.
Then I bumped into the husband. "Here's your ointment, good sir."
"Why, thank you my dear chap. Here, give the case back to my wife for me. I obviously don't have room in my pockets to carry a tiny case with me until I get home, so you must do it. Run along, now"
"Ok"
So I returned the case to the wife, who gave me a pair of leg armour thingies. I applied them, only to disappear. Egads! They're bewitched! Not so, as I promptly returned, bearing a pair of tights. "You mad woman, these are tights! They're not fit for one as manly as I! Are you trying to scupper my reputation?"
Her silence was incriminating.
Nevertheless, I decided to keep the tights. They gave me an extra point of defence, and I found the snug fit rather pleasing.
It was then that I realised that I hadn't spoken to any other players. I wandered north to a fountain and found a rather burly guy. "Hi", said I, amiably.
"BYE" said he, rudely, and then ran off laughing at my tights. I was so dejected that tears came to my eyes. I noticed a small boy crying next to me, and decided to see if we could cheer each other up. Well, it turned out that he got split up from his father.
That could wait for later.
I picked up a few more quests, and headed out again. Eventually I made it to level 4! Hurrah! I even picked up a pair of knuckledusters to aid in the rabbit and worm slaughter. I ended up buying a new piece of armour, which rather looked like a bondage suit. Ah well, at least I'm edgy.
All in all, it's a fun game. I can see myself actually spending money on this if I get a broadband connection.

Oh, and I'm apparently on Unicorn. Is there anyone else on that server, and if not, can I move to the server that you guys play on?

Edit: Okay, I've been reading through this thread. I see that you guys play on Seraph. Well, there was space to stick a worldpass code in when I created my character, so if anyone wants to invite me... *puppy dog eyes*

UPDATE! After trying my hand at the rollingacharacter for Seraph game, I decided to get lucky and bizarrely find a worldpass code for Seraph within 2 mins of searching on Google. So, I'm an Elvaan White Mage in that same San D'iego place, called Magnakai. Feel free to say hi. I'll probably be killing bunnies in West R-thingy for a while. I have no idea how to play a WTM, so this is just making it up as we go....
