Nope the limited one was never offered for retail sale, club nintendo had 2 contests to win them, the hot mario campaign & the 20th anniversairy campaign.

From what I've read recently though, the Hot Mario campaign made 3000 more available, so the total created was 4000...? I don't know if there was any difference between the two runs, although the winners in the Hot Mario contest got SMB free as well in the prize.

Just looked back through my old emails, there was actually 3 campaigns i totally forgot of the 2nd one.

1st campign, It wasnt club nintendo like i thought but a regular contest. In certain games there was a entry form & a sticker you put on it, you used this to enter (i found one in FFCC on the gamecube). This was the Famicom 20th anniversairy campaign & there was 1000 limited famicom sp's as prizes.

2nd campaign was also a regular nintendo contest for the famicoms 20th anniversairy, you had to write a small essay on what the famicom meant to you, the winners essays were posted on nintendo's site. (i'll see if there still up) There was 1000 given away for this contest. It was the same box as the 1st contest.

the 3rd & final campaign was the Club nintendo hot mario campaign, you registered certain mario games on club n to be entered into a prize draw, the winners got a limited famicom sp but it came in a hot mario branded outer box with a copy of SMB like the ones in the famicom mini series, thre were 2000 of these given away.

Yeah I'd failed to mention the outer box on the Hot Mario campaign. I got neither outer box or game so I don't know which contest mine had been won from originally!

No, I just bought the boxed and complete SP as that's all the guy had. Whether he had originally owned the outer box and/or letter, no idea.
